CADETS AND DINGHY RACING

The Plym Yacht Club has an active Cadet Section, which regularly delivers sailing achievements. The season’s activities included a Monday evening race series (April-Sept) complemented by training evenings, a week-end training event, and an Autumn coaching series. Club cadets participate in the PPSA Regatta and local, regional and national sailing events. We normally have cadets selected for both National and South West Regional Squads in the Mirror Class.

The Club Sailing Policy currently offers sailing experience for cadets rather than formal instruction, however a number of formal teaching establishments exist within the locality and the club consolidates the training given through these, and by parents.

The cadet section is for young people between the ages of 8 and 21 years.  Racing is offered in Mirror dinghies and Toppers/Lasers.

Safety and support cover is provided by a suitable number of RIB’s and the club Pilot launch typically providing cover significantly better than the RYA recommended ratio of 10:1. Safety boats, are skippered by qualified club volunteers. Dinghies are launched from the slip-way at RAF Mount Batten under the supervision of a beach-master who keeps a record of all participants and verifies their safe return ashore. Races are started from our start box on Mount Batten Breakwater from which the race officers provide further surveillance support and set courses suitable for the prevailing conditions.

A pre-season programme is offered at the clubhouse on programmed Friday evenings commencing at 1930 hours.
