In the 19th century, due to a high infant mortality rate, tradition, disease
and an almost complete lack of contraception,
the birthrate in England was enormous, with every family having a large
number of children - sometimes as many as
twenty.
The Bronté family seem to have been an exception, the Reverend
Patrick and his wife Maria only having five daughters and one son.
Why?
In 1971, a team of eminent historians set themselves the task of finding
the answer to this puzzling anomaly.
Their conclusion, reached after many years of painstaking research, is
one that will astound .
There were not five bronte sisters. There were at least fourteen!
Branwell was not an only son. He had eleven brothers. In this exhibition,
we have brought together all the facts, details and evidence of the missing
Bronté children, and for the first time make public the truth about
the missing Brontés.
