In 1999, Jon was awarded a PhD from the University of Leeds for his research into ‘aesthetic pacifism’ in Britain during the First World War.

This research was adapted in 2002 for publication by Manchester University Press as ‘A War of Individuals’

Jon was an occasional contributor to Manchester’s City Life magazine and in 2003, Jon edited the City Life Book of Lesbian & Gay Short Stories (www.commapress.co.uk), published to coincide with Manchester’s Europride festival and featuring short stories from, amongst others, Larry Kramer, Val McDermid and Patrick Gale.

In 2005, Jon researched and interviewed for gay-themed items broadcast on Stockport’s Pure Radio.

During 2006, Jon had two of his monologues performed as part of the Manchester Lesbian and Gay Chorus and OUTwrite collaboration concerts in Manchester.
