WHAT IS QUESTING BEAST?

Questing Beast Books is the award-winning small press based in the heart of Snowdonia - the mountainous region of North Wales. It operates as part of the Questing Beast Society for the promotion, appreciation and publication of alternative literature and fringe culture. Questing Beast began in the early 1990s as a publishing cooperative based in London, UK, and by 1994 had re-located.

WHAT’S THE POINT OF QUESTING BEAST?

The primary impetus for Questing Beast was to offer an exciting and less predictable alternative to corporate mainstream publishers, who seemed to churn out fashionable, highly promoted, over-written, over-edited, bland and safe fiction…

WHAT KIND OF THINGS DOES QUESTING BEAST PUBLISH?

Hopefully, people who read Questing Beast books have an exciting and stimulating experience… Questing Beast aims to publish potent literature where the fury, indignation, obsession, enthusiasm… passion of the writer comes through and leaps out from the page.

DOES QUESTING BEAST HAVE ANY KIND OF TRACK RECORD?

Questing Beast published the first 16 issues of ‘The 5 Times’, the Science and Science Fiction fanzine (winner of the SFX Magazine readers awards for Best Fanzine for three consecutive years), and currently publishes the ‘Scrawl Webzine’ (all about words and their use throughout media, part-funded by The Arts Council Of Wales) and ‘Sutekh’s Gift’ (a series of anthologies and editions showcasing imaginatively dark short stories). Notably, one of Questing Beast’s first fiction publications was the acclaimed ‘Scraps’, by Remy Dean… closely followed by the UK edition of the classic US-Anarchist novel, ‘The Last Days Of Christ The Vampire’, by J G Eccarius.

DOES QUESTING BEAST CONSIDER NEW MANUSCRIPTS?

Yes. But remember, just because a mainstream publishing house has turned you down, doesn’t mean that you’re radical – it could just mean that you’re manuscript is a bit crap and needs more work…

Questing Beast is a small press with a quest, but very limited resources. We are looking for exciting, new writing from writers with an exciting, new way of telling a gripping story, but realistically, we cannot take on many new books until we have an unexpected success or get a bigger arts council grant – please. (Recently Questing Beast have used Café Press to make the publication of ‘risky’ literature a more viable possibility… Keep a watch on the Questing Beast Books Blog for more on this.)

WHERE ARE QUESTING BEAST BOOKS AVAILABLE?

Good bookstores should be able to get hold of any current Questing Beast title. All current Questing Beast books can be bought on-line, either from Café Press or direct from Questing Beast Distribution. Past publications are usually available from amazon.co.uk. Of course, ‘Scrawl’ is a webzine, so that’s free to anyone with access to the internet!
