MARY HOLLAND

{short description of image}
Mary Holland

The snow "MARY HOLLAND". Built by Henry Jones at Canol y Clwt yard, Porthmadog in 1854 for John Meluish of Liverpool. He was a partner of James Baines owner of the famous Black Ball Line. The "MARY HOLLAND" (Henry Jones retained a 16/64ths share in her) traded deep sea and in 1863 was sold to David Williams of Newcastle NSW, Australia, and sailed for the Williams brothers for another quarter of a century in the Aussie - NZ trade. In addition to his famous clipper ships, Baines owned several unglamorous cargo ships, mostly built of wood in North America. Several of his masters were Welsh and his Marine superintendant was Captain Thomas Williams of Criccieth. When Baines went bankrupt in 1866, Captain Williams (and others) bought some of the ships.
