Originaly built as a schooner at Duddon, Cumbria, in 1913 for the Hodbarrow Mining Company. She was the last commercial sailing vessel built in Britain. At some stage she had an engine installed and was rigged down to a ketch. She was then owned in the West Country. The EMILY BARRAT was engaged in the coastal trade and was a caller at Porthmadog during the 1920's and 30's. She may have been owned there at some stage (check) or been chartered by local people.

I saw her, almost derelict, lying at Charlton, London River in 1976. Was rescued and taken to Maryport (where she had been first owned) and some restoration work was carried out. Funds ran short and she was handed over to the nearby Barrow Dock Museum around 1990. Sadly, no further restoration was carried out and she is now (1997) in a poor state

March 2000. I hear from Tim Latham that she is to be broken up.Portions have been saved and will be on display at the Dock Museum in Barrow. Tim's website has information on the Cumbria built ships and other Maritime History of the North West, at...
