The crew were Guto Mawr, Robin Cadwalader (Dad) and Ifan Woodward(Gwgi). Halfway across Cardigan Bay she started taking water and the pumps couldn't keep up so they put into Pwllheli and tied her up by the railway station, (Jack Ben piloted them in). After their exhausting adventure the gallant crew repaired to the "Mitre" for refreshment. On their return they found that the vessel had settled on the bottom. At the next high tide shewas dragged over to where the new marina is now, and abandoned. I well remember her rotting away for years. ....RDC |

Racing from New Orleans to Liverpool with a cargo of cotton, Captain Harp mistook Bardsey light for the East coast of Ireland and was under full canvas when his fineship shuddered to a halt three miles offshore. Meanwhile the Liverpool ship CULLODEN, heading for home with a cargo of Canadian timber, had been following the clipper and also hit the Causeway, at the southern end. The crew abandoned ship and arrived at Barmouth in their own boats to give the first news of the wreck. Later that night Capt Harp reboarded the PRIDE OF THE SEA to inspect the damage and take off food and blankets for his shipwrecked crew of thirty six ashore at Barmouth. Next morning the clipper was seen to be on fire and she continued to burn for 48 hrs before her hull collapsed. The above account is from ""Shipwrecks of North Wales"" by Ivor Wynne Jones. ". This is a well known wreck and wreckage was still visible after 50 years. The SEDULOUS had 20 tons of dynamite for P'madog. She also had a load of iron (copper?) ore for? Whitehaven. She picked her pilot up at St Tudwals and proceeded inwards expecting to meet the steam tug at the Bar. The tug was busy elsewhere so the master decided to carry on as the wind was favourable. Unfortunately the wind died and the vessel was swept back by the ebb tide onto the Bar. She broke up but one of the masts was gripped by the iron ore and remained visible for years. |
