| Thomas
Williams was Master then Marine Superintendant with the Famous "Black
Ball Line" of Liverpool. When James Baines got into financial
troubles in the 1860s, Capt Williams bought some of the old wooden ships
from him. This was the start of his shipping business. He later had the
famous "Cambrian " ships built but died young in the late
1880's His wife carried on the business for a few more years but
eventually the ships were taken under the management of William Thomas
the well known Liverpool and Anglesey shipowner/manager. Capt. Williams spent his time between Liverpool and Criccieth. He was one of the leading figures in establishing the "English" chapel on Marine Crescent. Much of the money for its building came from other sea captains and ship agents from all over the world.(Aled Eames - "Ventures in Sail") |
