Woodbridge look set to be our first victims

Despite being outgraded on every board, we came away with a 5-4 lead against Woodbridge, and a piece up in the one adjourned game.  But I found it agonizing to watch the last four games with everything in the balance.  Well done, chaps!

Tony continued his remarkable form on top board with a win against an Alekhine’s Defence.  Ray was also as solid as ever (playing against an old university adversary) – he mounted a serious threat against the White King, but not enough to force a result.  Richard, playing against a French Defence by transposition(?), held his nerve under considerable time pressure to score.  Dan, who I was told wasn’t feeling too well, showed that he knew his opening better than his opponent and secured the half point.  I faced a From Gambit (played by someone who habitually plays the Grob Attack (1. g4) and the Greco-Counter Gambit! – so no surprise there) and unfortunately missed an easy win. My thanks to David who had to leave his uneaten dinner and still managed to arrive before the deadline. (Shame about his result, though).  Bill faced a tricky endgame with both players short of time, but should easily win on resumption. (We depend on you, Bill, so best of luck).  Arnold took a valuable half point from a stronger opponent.  Andres, in his usual manner, threw everything (except the chessboard) at his opponent, but to no avail.  My thanks to Alistair for coming in as a reserve for his first match for the Club and winning a rapidplay finish that went right to the limit.

Next match – against Atheneum on Monday 10 November at Dudley Court, Tenants Hall, 36 Endell Street, WC2 (entry by entryphone). REMEMBER – the start time is 6.45pm.  Atheneum are stronger than Woodbridge and have won their first two matches.  We shall be without Tony, but Robin and Emil will be back.
