News

So what's been happening in the world of Simon and/or Garfunkel recently? Well here's where you'll find out.

If anyone has any news please email me.

Paul Simon on live chat on AOL.

Paul is doing a Live event on AOL at 10pm ET on 27/01/98. Write any questions you have for him to the newsgroup (alt.music.paul-simon) and they'll get asked hopefully. If I can get permission I'll copy the transcript here after the event.

Art Garfunkel On his European Tour

I went to see Artie at the London Palladium tonight (April 6th). It was a great show, it was half Paul Simon songs and half others. Songs included 'A Heart in New York', 'Poem on the Underground Wall', 'Cecilia', 'Sound of Silence' ,' I Only Have Eyes For You', 'Homeward Bound', 'Mrs Robinson', 'Bright Eyes', 'Bridge Over Troubled Water', 'April Come She Will', 'Feelin' Groovy' and more... He did a great job on Bright Eyes and Bridge, an amazing voice. His wife and son were there too. They joined him on stage for a few numbers and his wife sang harmony. James, his son, is great, he's only 6 and was so sweet.

As for banter, Art made a good job of it. Joking about how he wanted the words for Mrs Robinson to be 'Jesus loves you more than you ever knew, woo woo woo' and he sang that too, he jokingly blamed that for the duo's breakup. He reminisced about old times in London, how he and Paul had busked in Leicester Square. Now that would have been something to see! He lived in Stepney on Cable Street.

He had four guys to back him up. Two keyboardists, one guitarist and Steve Gadd on drums. I was quite surprised to see him there, Paul's favourite drummer. All in all I was very impressed, but I am slightly biased am I not?

Some news on the Capeman from the newsgroup

Subj: Capeman Update Date: 97-04-04 15:27:23 EST

Hi All, I found this article today which you will probably find interesting. From today's New York Post:

"Famed dancer and choreographer Mark Morris gets to know if he's got what it takes on Broadway when rehearsals start in two weeks for "The Capeman", singer/songwriter Paul Simon's eagerly awaited first musical.

Production plans call for the show, which has a cast of 40, to tour out of town before beginning previews on the Great White Way in December. It is based on the chilling true story of the notorious 1960s New York gang leader Salvador "The Capeman" Agron.

Morris, who was the choreographer of a recent workshop production of "The Capeman", will direct the show for Simon, who's also acting as one of the producers, along with Joe Rascoff.

"Morris did such a great job during the workshop that Paul wanted him to direct" a close Simon associate told Post Plus yesterday.

"Paul believes Mark has the talent and drive to follow in the footsteps of choreographers who went on to become great directors, such as Bob Fosse and Jerome Robbins" the Simon associate added.

Friends of Simon also say Morris has earned his respect for another important reason. A perfectionist like Simon, he works extremely well with the legendary pop icon.

Noted movie actor Ruben Blades and Marc Anthony will both play Agron. Anthony will portry the 18-year old Agron who, dressed in his trademark red-lined black satin cape, stabbed two innocent people to death in Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen.

Blades will be the "reformed" 38-year old killer who after spending two decades behind bars, struggled to make it as a professional writer. Blades was featured in Robert Redford's "Milagro Beanfield War". Agron, who was sentenced to life in prison, eventually was freed by New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller. A dramatically changed but tormented man, he died five years later.
