Dr. Tony Berendt trained in Medicine in Cambridge
and Oxford (United Kingdom) before specialising
in Infectious Diseases. He was a Medical Research Council Training Fellow and
later a Lister Institute Research Fellow, working on malaria and subsequently
staphylococcal pathogenesis. He has
worked on the Bone Infection Unit (BIU) at the Nuffield
Orthopaedic Center
(NOC), Oxford,
since 1992 and was appointed as its first Consultant Physician-in-Charge in
1997. The BIU undertakes the multidisciplinary management of approximately 300
cases of acute and chronic bone and joint infection annually and with the Oxford
Radcliffe Hospitals Department of Infectious Diseases, supervises the largest
outpatient parenteral antibiotic therapy service in the United Kingdom.
Dr. Berendt has lectured extensively within the UK and
internationally, and has authored over 25 textbook chapters and review articles
on musculoskeletal infection. With Prof.
Ben Lipsky, (Puget Sound Veterans Administration, Seattle), he co-presented
“Meet the Professor” sessions on bone and joint infection at the IDSA Annual
Meetings in 2001 and 2002, and on diabetic foot infection at the 2004 IDSA
meeting. He served on the committee that
produced guidelines on diagnosing and treating the infected diabetic foot for
the International Consensus on the Diabetic Foot, and was Vice-Chair of the
IDSA Committee that has produced clinical practice guidelines on Diagnosing and
Treating Diabetic Foot Infection. He was recently appointed Medical Director of
the NOC and now divides his time between clinical, teaching, research and
managerial work.
