Martyn Butcher trained as a general nurse in Essex, qualifying in the early 1980’s. After working as a staff nurse in A&E, he specialised in burns and plastic surgery and moved to Devon to take up a post as Senior Charge Nurse in the sub-regional unit at Derriford Hospital.

 

After a period as a nurse manager, he returned to clinical nursing when he was asked to set up the T.V. Service in 1995. In 2001, he co-ordinated the amalgamation of the T.V. Service and Dermatology treatment clinic in his employing Trust.

 

He has lectured widely in the UK, Europe and the US; and published articles on subjects as diverse as the management of wound sinus; the use of emollient therapy in skin care; and the prevention of pressure damage during childbirth. He has recently qualified as an Extended and Supplementary Prescriber and is currently developing nurse-led interventions in dermatology.

 

Martyn is a member of the Tissue Viability Society, Wound Care Society, is a past chairperson of the Westcountry Tissue Viability Group, and is the current Chair of the Tissue Viability Nurses Association.
