Internet Resources


Unknown to some online users, sophisticated technology have been developed to ascertain the location and identity of a user's PC.  For example, see:-

  • Anonymiser – enables users to surf the web anonymously.
  • CERT Coordination Center - Operated by Carnegie Mellon University, it provides useful information on internet security and its vulnerabilities.
  • CNIL  - French Data Protection Commission website: a section on how the user is traced online.
  • DSL Report – A scan of the PC’s security using Shield Probe.
  • Onion Routing – A project that builds 'an Internet-based system [which] resists traffic analysis, eavesdropping, and other attacks both by outsiders (e.g. Internet routers) and insiders (Onion Routers themselves).'
  • Privacy Net Analysis – detailed information of your system including web browser, cookies etc.
  • Privacy Resources – Useful information on protecting privacy online.
  • Symantec Check – Scans your PC’s address and recommends ways to protect security of your PC.
There are several ways in which users can prevent companies from surfing their habits.  See a brief guide to online privacy, compiled by the Center for Democracy & Technology. In addition, the following may be useful:-
  • AdSubtract – Offers filtering to eliminate unwanted advertisements, animated images, cookies, pop-up windows etc.
  • Anonymous Communications – Developed by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), it is a project directed at addressing the effects of anonymous and pseudonymous communications on the Internet.
  • Barefoot – Free cookie management systems.
  • Big Brother Inside – Information about protecting the privacy of your PC.
  • Biomet – Based in Sydney, it aims to bring together a diverse set of biometric information including products developed. 
  • Bugnosis - Developed by Privacy Foundation and used to track web bugs.
  • Cauce - "Cauce" is the acronym for Coalition against unsolicited commercial email, created by Netizens.
  • Chooseyourmail.com  - Spam-free email service using a mail verification program and fully POP3 compliant.
  • Cookie Crusher  - Filters cookies before it reaches your PC.
  • Cookie Central  - Detailed analysis into cookies and provides recent news to privacy.
  • Cookie Jar 2.0.1 – Allows users to control over which sites can send cookies to the user’s computer.
  • Firewall Forensics Explains the use of firewall logs and the implication of each firewall log.
  • Firewall Guide – Contains a comprehensive list of firewall products.
  • 4SecureMail - Provides secure email account with RSA SSL encryption.
  • Guidescope -  A free software to block web-advertising.
  • Junkbusters -  Founded in 1996, its aim is to help people get rid of junk mail
  • Mutemail – Anonymizing email activities. Sending e-mails anonymously securely and snoop-proof.  All mail messages are encrypted.  Sender's identity is confidential.
  • My-e-Trust.com – My-e-Trust.com offers anti-virus protection and personal firewalls for users.
  • P3P – A standard developed by the World Wide Consortium to give users control over the use of information on the web sites they visit.
  • Primedius - Provides online privacy and security tools for consumers.
  • Privacy Companion – Developed by Idcide, Inc., Privacy Companion enables users to detect and block third party cookies.
  • Privacy Watch  - aimed at protecting the user's privacy online with articles on issues such as data mining etc.
  • Spam Cop – Filters out spam and report spammers to their ISPs.
  • SpamHaus Project - a non-profit volunteer organisation funded by UXN, it works with ISPs to identify and remove spammers from the internet.
  • Spam Laws – Created by David E. Sorkin, Associate Professor of Law at the John Marshall Law School, it provides a general overview of spam laws with links to cases and articles.
  • Spychecker – As its name suggests, it checks any free software that may install components without the user’s  knowledge.
  • Steve Gibson - A recommended site for users with free downloads, created by Steve Gibson.
  • Web Washer - Web Washer filters unwanted advertising and protects the surfer's privacy by filtering cookies, referer strings and Web bugs.
  • Window Washer - A clean up utility of your PC.
  • Zone Alarm - A free download of zone alarm for personal use.

The other alternative is to consider purchasing firewall softwares from McAfees.
