This page is intended to provide links to a wide range of electronic sources on data protection and privacy. This includes research projects, companies' webpages and academics' homepages. It was last updated April 2006.

  • A Privacy Forum - Created in 1992 by Lauren Weinstein, topical subjects on privacy such as information and database collection are provided.
  • Act Now - Training courses are offered on data protection and freedom of information within the public sector by Ibrahim Hasan and Paul Simpkins.
  • Angus HamiltonHamilton Solicitors ceased to run on 30 October 2005. The author has been appointed as District Judge. However, you can still find useful information about data protection issues.
  • Business Link: Data Protection Information - Business Link provides advice and information regarding the Data Protection Act, including compliance with the data protection legislation, regulations concerning privacy in marketing and your legal requirements regarding notifying the Information Commissioner.
  • Compliance and Privacy -  Sponsored by VeriSign, it provides information on e-commerce issues that concerns businesses including privacy and data protection.  Those who register on the website also have access to free industry reports and newletters.
  • ENLIST - a project run by the University of Strathclyde and includes subjects on data protection and e-commerce.
  • Global Internet Policy Initiatives - A joint project of the Center for Democracy and Technology and Internews, it emphasizes the protection of privacy for the consumer in the online environment. Also provides additional information on E-Commerce.
  • Liberty Alliance Project - Established in April 2003,  it aims to establish a federated network identity through open technical specifications.

  • Masons - Recently merged with Pinsent to form Pinsent Masons. Also specialises on data protection, there are some useful articles provided. See the latest newsletter (pdf) on data protection developments.
  • Online Privacy Alliance - Created to support self-regulatory initiatives across the private sector. Based in the US.
  • Parkinson Howe -  As an independent Information Security Consultancy Practice, it offers practical advice on BS7799, which are guidelines on complying with the security issues under the Data Protection Act 1998.
  • Privacy Activism - As a  non-profit organization its goal 'is to enable people to make well-informed decisions about the importance of privacy on both a personal and societal level.'

  • PrivacyExchange - Created and managed by the Center for Social and Legal Research, it provides online news and information on privacy and data protection in general. A free news update on privacy and data protection events worldwide is provided by subscribing on their website.

  • Privacy International  - Established in 1990,  it is a human rights group formed as a watchdog on surveillance by governments and corporations. There is a wealth of information provided on privacy and regular news updates are provided in this field.
  • Privacy and Data Protection  - Journal aimed at data protection professionals. Free articles are provided on data protection as well as the Ultimate Guide to the Data Protection Act.
  • Privacy/Data Protection project - Run by the University of Miami Ethics programs, its focus is on health privacy issues with particular attention on the new privacy health regulations under HIPAA.
  • Privacilla - This is a web-based project dedicated to 'unravel the concept of "privacy" as a public policy issue.  It provides a good set of resources to privacy, which I would recommend to anyone interested in this topic.
  • PrivacyLaw.net - Provides information on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act.
  • The Privacy Page - Compiled by Jeroen Terstegge, it contains a list of useful links to privacy resources and national data protection authorities. Highly recommended! 
  • Privacy.org - As a joint project between Epic and Privacy International, it provides daily news and information on privacy. Well worth a visit!
  • PRIVIREAL - Funded by the European Commission, the project examined the implementation of the Data Protection Directive 95/46/EC in relation to medical research and the role of ethics committees.
  • PrivacySpot.com - Sponsored by Hughes and Luce, it "provides news, commentary and resources related to current privacy law and data protection topics and issues."
  • Professor Reidenberg's Home page - Professor Reidenberg has also written extensively in the field of data protection. He recently wrote a book entitled Data Privacy Law with Professor Paul Schwartz. His homepage does include links to his works.
  • The Progress & Freedom Foundation  - Founded in 1993, it aims to "study the digital revolution and its implications for public policy". It has recently conducted a survey of commercial internet sites, which indicated that websites were collecting less personal information.
  • Research Centre for Data Security - Part of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University, it was established to analyse the sphere of data protection in Germany. The centre is currently headed by Professor Simitis. NB. Most of the material is in German language.
  • Sibilo - Sibilo is a 'Manchester (UK) based systems integrator that specialises in Information Management solutions.' Their two major areas of expertise are Internet Applications and Data Protection.  The company has designed a software called "Datasmart", which offers features such as notification entries and audit trails.

  • Technology Policy Group - An initiative of the Ohio Supercomputer Center, it aims to 'tackle the legal and policy challenges of the emerging networked world.' It also provides a regular update to privacy news through its online Privacy 2000 webpage.
  • The Privacy Hub - As it title suggests, it provides a good resource to projects on data protection funded by the EC.
  • Truste®
  • UK Data Protection Forum - Provides a wealth of opinions and guidance about data protection. Individuals or organisations may subscribe by emailing them (a subscription is required).
  • Understandingprivacy.org - As its title suggest, it provides information about protecting privacy for consumers online.
  • Virtual Privacy Office -  Based in Schleswig-Holstein, it provides Information on privacy protection institutions from all over the world. A lot of material, however,  is in German language.
  • Virtual Society - Funded by the ESRC, the project aimed to 'provide new information about attitudes and practices within the system of data protection as it is altered under the influence of legislation, technological change and new uses of personal data.' Although the project has ended there are interesting reports on this.
  • Westbrook Data Protection Services - Headed by an experienced lawyer, Clara Westbrook, it provides a comprehensive source of guidance, advice and training in the field of data protection and freedom of information.  A free newsletter is provided (subscription is required on their website). In addition, there is a forum created for any discussions relating to data protection in general.
  • World Privacy Forum  - Founded in 2003 as a non-profit organisation in California, its mission is to 'to conduct research, investigate, and document the state of personal privacy in the Information Age and explore the privacy implications of a range of technologies and policies for the purpose of educating the public and policymakers about these issues'. It has recently published a report into the privacy of job seekers
