View of Totland Bay c. 1890. Due to the lack of sea defences, the cliff was far more vulnerable to erosion at its foot by the sea, consequently the cliffs collapsed regularly, leaving fresh sections uncovered.

April 2003. Totland Bay is now protected by sea defences that have allowed the cliffs behind to become stabilised. More scrub and trees have become established, covering large areas of the cliff face, although there are occasional small landslides.
