The Watch Stone stands 5.6 metres tall. It is located 119 metres north
west of the Stones of Stenness and could be considered to be an outlier
of that circle. The dimensions of the Watch Stone are comparable to
those of the circle stones.
The Watch Stone currently stands alone. However in 1930 the stump of a
companion was found a little distance to the south west. Suggestions
have been made that the stones formed part of an avenue linking the
Ring of Brodgar and the Stones of Stenness. Alternatively they may have
been the remaining monoliths of a long lost stone circle. Another
possibility is that they may have formed a portal or gateway through
which people approaching the Stones of Stenness from the Ness of
Brodgar would have had to pass.
