What is the Dojo Kun?
The dojo kun are the rules of the dojo. The five priciples aim to provide guidance as to how a karateka should behave in both training and life. Although its origin is uncertain Sensei Gichin Funakoshi is often accredited with the creation of the dojo kun although there is some evidence to suggest that it originated with Sakugawa Tode, a 18th century karate instructor in Okinawa.
Some Shotokan classes recite the dojo kun at the end of the class with the senior student reciting each rule and the rest of the class repeating the rules in turn.
