Newton, Sir Isaac (1642 - 1727)
English scientist, born in Woolsthorpe, Lincolnshire, England on 25th December 1642.
His three great discoveries were:
That white light could be split into components forming the visible spectrum.
Calculus (debatably invented by him independently of Leibnitz) could be used to investigate the forces of nature in a quantitative way.
To show, by his theory of gravitation (for which Copernicus, Kepler and Galileo had prepared the way) that the universe was regulated by simple mathematical laws.
His vision was set forth in the Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica
of 1687, usually called the Principia.
