TAO TE CHING

Frequently Asked Questions

Will practicing Tai Chi affect my religious beliefs?

No. You do not have to subscribe to any religion. As far as I am aware, it does not contravene any religious teachings.

Do I have to give up meat?

No.

Is it difficult to learn?

You can not 'learn' it all. There is just too much to learn. Even the highest Chinese masters will tell you that they are not perfect. I would say the best way to approach it is to say that we are all 'practicing' Tai Chi.

How fit do you have to be?

Tai Chi suits the pace of every individual. The aim is steady, gradual improvement.

Do I need any special clothes or equipment?

No. Any loose-fitting garments that allow free range of movement are acceptable. Some thin-soled plimsoles or trainers are advisable.

Are there any belts or grades, like Karate or Judo?

There are no official belts. It is understood that people assimilate tai chi at different rates. Therefore, the student does not have a rigid curriculum. However, there exists a rating of five levels. These are based on the quality of posture and movement of the individual.
