'First Response' is a registered charity and as such receives no official
funding from the MoD/RAF or the Ambulance Service, relying totally on support
and fund raising from sections within Marham and from the local communities that
it serves. Monies raised are used to purchase essential kit including uniform,
medical bags and contents, and more recently a Training Defibrillator. Future
plans are to obtain a new Response Car to replace the Fiat Stilo which in 2
years of service on the scheme has already completed over 60,000 miles.
First Response was set up to operate outside of the volunteer's normal working
day, and it was important not to interfere with their primary roles within the
Air Force, shift patterns and station duties.
Therefore they operate the following shifts:
Sunday to Thursday 18:00 - 00:00
Friday to Saturday 18:00 - 02:00
Saturday to Sunday 09:00 - 18:00
So the big question is 'Does It Work?
Well, Marham's First Response along with its sister schemes currently running
at Coltishall and Honnington have recently been praised by the East Anglian
Ambulance Service for helping the service to meet the national response times
laid down by the government and for providing a high standard of patient care
including treatment where needed.
The statistics speak for themselves, since
inception in June 2001 Call Sign 'R662' Marham's Response Car and team have
attended over 1000 emergency calls, putting the car out on shift over 800 times.
So what can you do to help ? :
Marham First Response is always looking out for new recruits to join. Upon
applying to join you will be encouraged to ride out as an observer on a shift,
this ensures that we select the right person for the team and subsequent
training. Sometimes jobs are not very pleasant and this also helps to identify
anyone who is of a squeamish disposition. Our selves and a senior ambulance
service paramedic then interview candidates who wish to continue with the
application to join.
After that it's just a case of waiting for a training course as either a Driver
(Clean licence required) or as a Clinical Responder. These courses take place at
the discretion of the Ambulance Service. Until then a successful candidate will
continue to ride out on the Response Car. If its not up your street we are
always looking for sponsorship and fundraising ideas.

The RAF Marham 10 Mile road Race and 6km Fun Run will take place on Sunday July
16th 2006 at Marham Village. Both the Marham 10 and the Fun Run are organized by
members of RAF Marham, in aid of the charity 'Out & About' and as part of the
Marham Village-fun-day. The 10 Mile Race and the 6km Fun Run will be open to
both Service and civilian competitors with prizes as listed below. However, the
main object of the event is to raise money for our nominated charity. If you
have always wanted to try a jaunt round the picturesque lanes of Marham and soak
up the atmosphere of a mass participation event, whilst raising money for a good
cause then the Fun Run is for you. However, if you are a touch more ambitious
and feel that there is a budding Brendan Foster in you, then why not try the 10
Miler, which includes a lap of RAF Marham Airfield.

The Charity:
"Out & About" began in 1984 and supports disabled children and young
people aged 5 - 19 to access leisure activities in West Norfolk and Suffolk.
Volunteers provide most of the direct support work to the 262 children and young
people that they support. They exist to enable disabled children and young
people to access their right to full and active inclusion in life. Raising
funds, helps them to provide a free service to the children and young people
that they support, as they do not believe that disabled children and young
people should be charged to take part in 'ordinary life experiences'. If you
wish to help in this valuable work, please print out the sponsorship form
relevant to the Race you decide to do.

Entry Forms along with sponsorship forms for both races are available from the

Race Diary:
The RAF Marham Running Club competes in various races throughout the
year, primarily in two distinct leagues.
During the summer months, the club takes part in the Lincolnshire Services Summer Road Racing League (LSSRRL). The league runs from May until September, and all races are flat and fast, and of varying length. The average course length is approximately 10km (6 miles).
During the winter months, the focus turns towards cross-country events.
The club participates in the civilian East Anglian Cross-Country League (EACCL),
which sees races the whole length and breadth of the county. Races in this
league can vary between venues, but are typically between 5km and 10km (3 to 6
miles).
Membership of the club is FREE and the main people to contact can be located
through the Gym on 01760 337261 Ext 7094
