About RIDE 3000

RIDE 3000 is a 7 lesson lifeskills and drug awareness programme for Year 9 (13 year olds). It comprises 7 structured class discussions of specific drug and behavioural topics and is meant as a class update of ideas and attitudes. It is critical time for young people - in the midst of puberty, enjoying considerable personal freedom, eager to sample adult life - and it thus important to take time out to exchange views and raise the level of debate that, hopefully, will again spread into the playground and back to parents and guardians at home.

RIDE 3000 lessons

Lesson 1 Keeping Safe discusses areas of concern to young people regarding personal safety and that their greater freedom results in greater exposure to danger; identifies risks in certain situations and discusses strategies for safely dealing with them.

Lesson 2 Understanding Stress and Peer Pressure discusses stress in modern life and assists pupils to identify own sources of stress; discusses how to manage physical and psychological effects of stress and differences between peer pressure and peer preference.

Lesson 3 Being Assertive when you need to discusses different behavioural patterns (assertive, passive, aggressive and manipulative) and the value of being assertive (in control); discusses different emotions (fear, anger, grief, joy) and how to manage behaviour under stress.

Lesson 4 Alcohol, Solvents and Steroids discusses how different amounts and strengths of alcohol affects the body and the real dangers of alcohol misuse; exchanges class views on the misuse of solvents and steroids.

Lesson 5 Party Drugs and the Law identifies different illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia and the consequences of their use on the individual (health) and others (social); makes pupils aware of the law relating to the importation, supply and use of illegal drugs.

Lesson 6 Practical First Aid updates and develops understanding and skills in emergency first aid, with particular reference to responding in cases of drug misuse (suspended breathing, choking, fainting) and violence (bleeding).

Lesson 7 Drug Issues - Your Say provides an opportunity for a serious debate of one or more (contentious) issues relating to legal or illegal drugs, as a class or together with invited guests (e.g. from police drug squad, drug rehabilitation, juvenile court, etc).
