THE GEORGIAN HOUSE

Houses in towns became bigger and more elegant in the GEORGIAN period. This was a period of time between 1714 and 1830 when Britain had four kings all called George. Any building built during this time is a Georgian building. The house on the left was built in about 1780, and we will call it GEORGE'S HOUSE.

Georgian house builders liked their surroundings to look neat, so many towns and cities were laid out with rows of red brick houses built around squares and parks. Dublin has lots of houses built at this time, but a lot of building also went on in Belfast.

The builders in the towns and cities wanted to put up as many houses as they possibly could in the smallest space. Look at this drawing of a Georgian house and explain how they did this.
