Ireland is sometimes
described as the land of saints and scholars. Young Irishmen
became monks and devoted their entire lives to God, living in
the monastery and teaching and praying. Many of these monks travelled
all over Europe to spread the Christian message. As a result
Ireland became well-known as a special place of Christianity.
The Irish monastery
was like a little village of wooden buildings, but there was
often a tall stone tower. These towers were built in case of
attack by the VIKINGS.
