CHICKEN LEGS WEAVER "NOWHERE"

FIRST PRESS REVIEWS!

Blues Matters #31 April-May 2006-

CHICKEN LEGS WEAVER Nowhere

Riverside

The Sheffield based punk/Blues band now signed with Riverside Records have a distinct sound and thrust - and the voice of Andy Weaver is prime stand-out here (what does he gargle with?)…then there's the music that he

dominates with his guitar, outlandish, irreverent or what, well yes, it's just creative and so different to anything else right now you'll either love it or hate it. Traditionalists beware then. The legendary Johnny Dowd produces this album which was recorded in the USA. The band have shared the stage in the last year with, amongst others, the Alabama 3 as their status grows. The music, thought provoking, stark, mind crunching, energetic, melancholy even, oh yes and catchy in parts. Particularly liked In The Ground with it's infectious lead pattern, Love Locked resembles the feel of a battle torn landscape, The Enemy Cannot Harm You carries the warning words “but watch your close friend”, Howling Road is story like and spellbinding. The slide work throughout the album is sterling stuff. Do take a listen but beware.

Album review by Dominic Pedler for Guitar Techniques. June 2006

CHICKEN LEGS WEAVER
Nowhere
Riverside Records

Those who think the Arctic Monkeys are the menacing new face of Sheffield haven¹t heard the harrowing urban blues of slide guitarist Andy Weaver and his tight trio that were first discovered by Sonic Youth¹s Thurston Moore.
Weaver¹s spiritual roots may lie in the Mississippi swamps of his Delta heroes, but this powerful debut updates the themes of fire and brimstone and devil-dealing with ballsy grooves and song structures that ditch the 12-bar format in favour of a 21st century blend of garage blues, gospel and punk.
The slippery slide of Desert Rose and the dreamy arpeggios of Howlin¹ Road capture Weaver¹s subtle range of guitar textures, but it¹s his apocalyptic vocals that steal the show with ominous strains of Son House, Howlin' Wolf, Tom Waits and Johnny Cash.
Atmospherically produced by Johnny Dowd, this is soul-searching contemporary blues from the wrong side of the tracks, as convincing as the Black Keys, Blues Explosion and White Stripes.    ****

CHICKEN LEGS WEAVER

Nowhere

Riverside

Scary music from the Deep South… of Sheffield

By its very nature, the blues is fed by dark and negative emotions. And yet British three-piece Chicken Legs Weaver are a blues band like few others. Likened to Howlin’ Wolf, Captain Beefheart, Tom Waits and the White Stripes, it was Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore that first championed them.

Produced in a remote log cabin in upstate New York by Johnny Dowd, Nowhere ties together several disenfranchised and distinctly melancholic strands, including blues, punk, alternative rock and even gospel in a disturbing style that’s been called nu-blues. Its songs are largely slow and menacing, the moodiness of In The Ground and Howling Road serving to double the shit-your-pants effect when Your Enemy Cannot Harm You finally kicks in.

Girls On Top sign with Riverside Records

14th October 2001

The outrageous glam-punk girl band GIRLS ON TOP has signed a deal with Riverside Records. Their debut album will be released in the UK in March 2002, distributed by BMG. Performing together for 5 years now, GIRLS ON TOP have won a reputation in London for a pulse-racing and vulgar stage-act. Their songs are punk-driven pastiches of modern living - the lyrics direct, full of sarcasm and anger and they have all the sleazy appeal of the New York Dolls.

In front of a silver- strip curtain, Neil Downe frantically fingers his guitar neck while Liddy Lustre squeals and thrashes her pearly Ludwig kit to death. Bassist and biker chick, Amanda Pukon pouts and throbs magnificently as Vicki De Vice writhes and taunts the audience, makes love to a hoover and gives birth to a monster baby.

                                                                               wpe1E.jpg (290479 bytes)

1998 saw the appearance of GIRLS ON TOP on TV as the fictitious band 'Trash' on Kavanagh KC. December 1997, the CD EP on the G.O.T label was released, featuring the cult classic "Barbie is a smackhead". Along came Camden's Nana records with a vinyl compilation of female artists (Spy 51, Gertrude, Some Sonic) and G.O.T's cottaging anthem "Boys meet". 'Ovulater', the tasteless CD LP, also on the G.O.T. label, was spawned at the end of 1999, and kicks off with "Fuckhead". It features the X-Ray Spex inspired, "Head in the oven", an on-stage fave - the hard and heavy "Monster baby", and the seedy slavery of "Trainee sex-god".

GIRLS ON TOP hit Paris in spring 2000 to a riotous reception with queues round the block! They played a national biker rally, 'Smoking Dog' in Epping, an outrageous private party in the Oxfordshire countryside and filmed a webcast for the Mean Fiddler organisation at LA2. During all this were performances with the UK Subs and the Vibrators at the Underworld, Monarch and an Xmas special at the Borderline which was rammed.

2001 G.O.T. went wild live with the Celtic Bones, The Parkinsons, 999 and Emergency. Also Charlie Harper's birthday party at the 100 Club. GIRLS ON TOP finally made Noo York City in August for a 4 date tour including CBGBs & Don Hills and so impressed the local punks, freaks & groovers that they made the cover of ‘NY Waste’ magazine and a live video is to be broadcast on a Manhattan cable channel.

Check them out live in London: 18/10, Hope & Anchor, Islington,   -      2/11, Gossips, Soho

The release will be followed by a tour in October. 2000-2001 has been an amazing year for NBZ, who have had a well-deserved come back, releasing all their classic albums for the first time on CD as well as their excellent new album "Refigerator", playing over 50 concerts in France and taking the Cognac Blues Passions festival by storm with a totally sold-out gig. And there is more to come...

Gwyn Ashton added to the bill for the Inmates’ launch gig

25th July 2001

Gwyn Ashton will be The Inmates’ special guest at London’s Borderline on September 20th. The gig will coincide with the UK release of his acoustic album "Beg, Borrow & Steel" (3rd September) while The Inmates will be celebrating the release of their "Meet the Beatles" live album (24th September). Both albums are released by Riverside Records, distributed through BMG.

Gwyn Ashton is playing festivals throughout Europe this summer with Fun Lovin’ Criminals, Frank Black & The Catholics, Eagle Eye Cherry, Canned Heat, Peter Green and Big Brother & The Holding Company. He was also seen hitting the Great Gransden stage in July joining Uli Roth, Graham Bonnet, Dave Murray and Don Airey for their finale. Although Gwyn’s new album is entirely acoustic, one can still expect some full-on electric guitar action on stage!

The Inmates: album launch party in London

16th July 2001

The Inmates will play a one-off gig at London’s Borderline on September 20th to celebrate the UK release of their legendary album"Meet the Beatles - Live in Paris" on Riverside Records (out 24th September). The album has never been released in the UK before and both masters and artwork had been lost for almost 15 years. The band still features its classic line-up of Bill Hurley (vocals), Peter Gunn (lead guitar), Tony Oliver (rhythm guitar), Ben Donnelly (bass) and Eddie (drums).

In 1987, the leading French newspaper Libération organised a concert in Paris to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Sgt Pepper album. They asked The Inmates to do that unique gig, bringing the dirty sound of stonesy R&B to the songs of The Beatles, like the Stones themselves did in 1963 when they covered I Wanna Be Your Man. "Meet the Beatles" is the live recording of that memorable concert. The album was praised by Paul McCartney himself and went to #1 in Scandinavia.

The Inmates are currently preparing a UK tour for the end of 2001, before touring Europe for the first time in over two years.

Riverside Records to release long lost "Beatles" album by The Inmates

2nd July 2001

The legendary "Meet the Beatles - Live in Paris" by the Inmates will be released this year by Riverside Records. Both original masters and artwork were lost after the album's original release in 1987 and no reprint had been possible since. The album comprises 13 tracks (2 more than the original vinyl LP), all written by Lennon-McCartney and performed live in a gun-smoking R&B style.

Gwyn Ashton to release "roots" album in September

18th June 2001

The Aussie guitar wonder will release his third album on Riverside Records on September 3rd (September 18th in France).

"Beg, Borrow & Steel" was recorded Down Under with an all-Australian backing band, and is a journey through Gwyn’s musical roots: all tracks have been recorded with acoustic instruments, which breaks from Gwyn’s usual brand of hard-hitting, bluesy rock. Most songs were played on his 1936 National Steel guitar (hence the title!) with just the right measure of double bass, Hammond organ, piano, harmonica and drums (with brushes, natch!). As usual, Gwyn wrote most of the songs.

After his critically acclaimed debut with "Feel The Heat", followed by the electric masterpiece "Fang It!", recorded with Rory Gallagher’s rhythm section, Ashton is set to surprise once again with his versatility.
