In 1893, Mr W H Collins started to cycle around Northumberland and Durham carrying a glass plate camera. The job was particularly eased by the advent of the new "Dry Plates" which could be taken home for development rather than requiring a portable darkroom and tent to develop the plates on the spot. He continued to do this until the early 1900s, taking his bicycle on the train for cycle tours as far as Aberdeen and Yorkshire. Technically, the plates were scanned at photographic quality using an Epson Perfection 4870 Photo scanner together with Silverfast software. The resulting scans were reduced to jpeg for internet use.
