Latest news 2/12/01

Gavin Bassinder, Brett McNamara and Steve Watson have been released. new signings are being sought.

Trinity's latest home defeat at the hands of 10 man Colwyn Bay left them in 15th position in the UPL, and Dave Norton with a headache. Now 0-3, the new Trinity boss had to name himself on the bench, together with junior player Carl LaRocca and an unfit Paul Watts. Lee Ellington made a surprise appearance, having not played at all since the Ilkeston game. Neil Allison was injured, Ian Gore was working, and Brian Linighan had travel problems. This meant a re shuffle with Circuit playing at right back with Danny Brown and Gowshall in the middle. Phil Brown played up front with the clearly unfit Ellington who seemed at about 60% effectiveness. Hall scored with a great right footer in the 35th minute, but Bay equalised after Limbert had seen his second yellow. Incredibly a horrible mistake by Gowshall let in Bay for a winner, who were indebted to their keeper Emberton for two excellent saves from Hall and Stanhope. Trinity played OK and were a bit unlucky, but you can't make mistakes like that against anyone.

This added to Trinity's 2-3 defeat against Lincoln Utd in midweek, a game i didn't see, along with everyone else in the world apart from 119 hardy souls.

Latest news 25/11/01

Dave Norton's first game as Trinity manager ended in a 1-0 defeat by Barrow. His first signing is gareth Williams from Ilkeston, a 34 year old forward, who may have been brought in as assistant manager. Where this leaves Phil Brown, we're not sure, but he wasn't at the game yesterday. Trinity will have to reduce their wage bill, as they now have the following squad.

Ingham, Gowshall, D.Brown, Gore, Linighan, Allison, Hall, Circuit, Stanhope, Hurst, Bassinder, P.Brown, Raynor, Watson,Watts, Ellington, McNamara, Williams, Reed, Holmes, Allen, Norton

A whisper suggests that Linighan, Raynor and McNamara will be the casualties.

There will be a chance to "Meet The Manager" at The Blues Club on Thursday September 29th at 9pm.

Latest news 18/11/01

Trinity's new manager is DAVE NORTON, who has had some managerial experience with Forest Green Rovers of the Conference. Although he watched Trinity grind out a 1-0 win at Bishop Auckland, his first match in charge will be a tough one at home to Barrow.

Trinity may soon have a striker crisis as Rodders and Macca will have to serve bans for their dismissals, both for F & A language. Ellington has glandular fever, and could be out for several weeks, and Wattsy went off at Bishop Auckland. Holmes, Reed and Allen won't be back before Christmas.

Latest news 4/11/01

Trinity's season came to a halt at Ilkeston when they were rather unluckily put out of the FA Trophy at their their first hurdle. Macca played at left back as Hall had injured himself in training, and Steve Circuit appeared on the bench for his first action of the season. Although Ilkeston started well, Gary Ingham making a couple of good saves, Lee Ellington was unlucky to see an excellent shot finger tipped onto the post. Ford, the keeper then made a good save from Rodders and at 0-0 at half time, Blues fans were optimistic. However, despite dominating large chunks of the second half, Trinity couldn't pull back a Knapper goal direct from a free kick early in the play. Ford denied Trinity again with a blinding save from (I think) Hursty's header. Stanhope got the ball in the net in the 72nd minute, but was offside. Rather hard luck on the Blues who deserved a draw in my opinion.

No further news on a new manager, but the names of Phil Brown, Paul Rayner, Phil Stant, Mark Lillis and Keith Alexander have been mentioned.

Latest news 24/10/01

Trinity boss Phil Tingay was sacked before the ULCC game at home to Frickley, which Trinity won 2-1. Frank Nicholson and Phil Brown will be in temporary charge of the team. It seems that the job will be advertised nationally, and a decision will be made in early November. Let the speculation begin !!

Latest news 21/10/01

In an amazing 8 days, Trinity went 0-4, 4-1 and 1-4. Its pointless trying to work out what will happen, it seems to depend on nothing more than mood, or the way the Aegir is flowing.

On Saturday, Trinity drew level with Runcorn at 1-1 through Paul Watts, but then the defence went for a nap, and handed 3 goals and 3 points to Runcorn, who were the better team. Wattsy was unlucky with a couple of good headers late on, but it remains a worry that they seem unable to change anything during a game when it goes wrong. A few days earlier Trinity had destroyed Whitby up in Northumberland with Rodders getting two. New man Paul Rayner, immediately installed as captain, was apparently a star. We shall see.

Latest news 16/10/01

Trinity apparently capitulated in a sorry fashion to Worksop going down 0-4 in the FA Cup. I didn't see this, so I won't comment.

One good piece of news, Phil Brown is fit again.

Latest news 11/10/01

Well, a result of Trinity 2 Worksop 1 doesn't sound anything to get especially excited about, especially in the ULCC, but the final few minutes of this game could have far reaching consequences for Trinity. Having played well, to secure a 2-0 lead through an Ellington penalty and a Rodders special, Trinity were pinned back by a penalty awarded to Worksop. 2-1. Then Spanner apparently elbows someone, gets a red, Big Brian (already booked) gets sarky with a linesman (whose feelings must have been terribly hurt....)and is given another yellow. Two big lads trudge off, putting the Blues down to 8, cos Hursty had gone off with a knee just before, Phil had used all the subs, so we played 10 minutes in a 4-3-0 formation with a back line of Brown, Gowshall, McNamara and Whitelam, and a midfield of Stanhope, Guest and Bassinder. Wow ! Those guys looked wide eyed when they trooped off having survived 10 minutes of Worksop "pressure". However the big one is on Saturday: it will start 11 v 11 but who knows what could happen. Let's hope Tuesday's ref Mr "Fairground" Booth isn't anywhere near Sandy Lane. On the off chance you are reading this Mr B, one question. How come you took no action against Worksop's number 7 (Mick Williams) who handled the ball for our penalty, and then handled deliberately again in the second half to prevent us going through on goal? He was daft enough to argue AFTER Lee had scored the pen, and got booked for that.Must have made a sarky remark.........

Oh yes. In all the excitement, Brett McNamara made his debut at number 10 and looked useful. Ended up at centre half !!!!

Latest news 6/10/01

Trinity grabbed a point from the game at Blyth after being 2-0 down in the first ten minutes. Paul watts grabbed 2 second half goals in what was apparently a much improved performance after the poor show at Frickley. Joby Gowshall returned from injury to replace Whitelam, while Ian Gore came back after his illness in place of Chris Pettit. Steve Watson, (ex Leeds Utd) made his debut in place of Bassinder.

Apparently Brett McNamara of Kettering, a forward, will be signed on Monday.

Latest news 3/10/01

Trinity lost to Frickley 3-1 last night, playing with 7 first teamers injured or unavailable. Centre back pairing Ian Gore and Brian Linighan were both unavailable, so Steve Appelby came into midfield and Chris Pettit made his debut alongside Neil Allison in a 4-4-2. Trinity began well, with Paul Watts scoring after 12 minutes, but the rest of the game was a horror show. First, Jason Whitelam passed into his own net when under no pressure to make it 1-1. In the second half Trinity posed no threat to Frickley. Although their second goal came when a dodgy handball decision against Allison was converted from the spot by ex-Blue Steve Price, the same player made no mistake with a 20 yarder to take the points. Trinity deserved nothing. Pettit did not let the team down, but there generally seemed to be a lack of effort.

However, remember that we are missing key players. Last night a whole first choice defence was missing (Gowshall, Linighan, Gore and Hall), as was a central midfield pairing in Reed and Brown. Apparently, Gowshall and Hall are nearest to fitness, and could figure in Friday nights game at Blyth. We are 13th in the League.

Latest news 30/9/01

With Rick Ranshaw returning to Grantham, apparently unhappy with the rotation system, Trinity began asearch for another forward. Mark Guest has been signed form Dinnington as a trialist, and played fro 45 minutes at North Ferriby. However, it seems that Trinity are attempting to sign Brett McNanara of Kettering. Kev Martin has been released.

Trinity went down 2-1 to North Ferriby in the ULCC, in a poor game when they were well beaten. Paul Watts scored Trinity's goal.

Trinity progressed to the 3rd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup after beating Dunston FB 5-1 on The Northolme. Fielding their only fit and available 11 senior players, Trinity were 1-0 up at half time (Gore from Stanhope's free kick), it coluld have been 1-3 as Dunston wasted chances, with Gary Ingham saving well twice. Brown, Bassinder and Stanhope could also have scored for Trinity. Dunston put Trinity under pressure in the second half but Lee Ellington scored with a diving header from Ian Gore's excellent cross. A goal from Stanhope, (placed beautifully from 20 yards) was followed by a Dunston penalty, but Blues made the final score flattering with 2 goals in the last 2 minutes, through an own goal and another emphatic shot from Ellington. Stanhope was made man of the match, but my eye was caught by an excellent game from Danny Brown who is well worth his place in this team. Ellington (again) and Allison also did well.

Injuries. Reed and Allen will not be fit until the New Year. None of Brown, Gowshall, Hall or Holmes will be ready to play for " 2 or 3 weeks" according to a source within the Trinity physio's camp.

Latest news 20/9/01

Trinity played well to fight out a 1-1 draw with high flying Gateshead on Tuesday. 2 new boys made their debut for Trinity, Steve Appelby in midfield, and Jason Whitelam at left back. Gavin Bassinder put Trinity ahead after 15 minutes with an excellent strike and Allison and Watts could have scored with a bit more luck. Gateshead equalisd on the half hour. The game was odd in that Gateshead seemed to have much more of the ball, but Trinity created the better chances. Our defence, especially Gore and Allison were excellent, while Danny Brown and Andrew Stanhope (captain) linked well down the right all game. Lee Ellington missed his first start, and came on for Paul Watts, but is obviously not fit, and should be rested next Tuesday. Lets hope some of Gowshall, Holmes Linighan and Hall are available for the FA Cup tie on September 29th.

Grantham have apparently put in 7 days notice for Rick Ranshaw. Ranshaw signed FROM Grantham this summer, and has scored 2 goals in 6 starts.

Latest news 17/9/01

Ex Boston midfielder Steve Appelby has joined Trinity from Holbeach. Joby Gowshall is rated very doubtful for tomorrow's game against Gateshead.

Latest news 16/9/01

Predictably, Trinity lost at Barrow, lacking the services of Brown, Hall, Holmes, Reed, Allison and Allen. £ Under-19s sat on the bench as only Joby Gowshall was able to return. Danny Brown was rewarded for his patience with his first start of the season. Reed has a hairline fracture and will be out for some weeks, like Phil Brown, but Neil Allison should be fit to return after the Gateshead game on Tuesday.

Trinity will play Dunstan FB on Sept 29th in the FA Cup. At home.

Latest news 11/9/01

Trinity were without Phil Brown (out for 6 weeks), Wayne Hall and Joby Gowshall for the trip to Hyde Utd on Monday. Replacements were Linighan, Bassinder and Holmes. Trinity had to name keeper Kev Martin as sub for this game. Trinity scored through Andrew Stanhope, but then injuries to Holmes Allison and Reed forced 3 substitutions, and keeper Martin found himself playing up front for 8 minutes ! Lee Ellington also limped off. Hyde equalised late on, and Trinity took a point. Could be an interesting team to face Barrow on saturday, depending on the seriousness of everyone's injuries.

Trinity's scorers after 8 games:

Ellington 4 Watts 4 Reed 3 Brown 3 Ranshaw 2 Allison 2, Gore, Stanhope, Hurst and Holmes 1

Latest news 9/9/01

Another 5 for the Blues and another team demolished, as Bamber Bridge left with nothing. Trinity won 5-0 at a canter. Lee Ellington opened the scoring with an excellent finish from Stanhopes cross. In fact none of the 5 goals was a soft goal. All required skill and power to finish, and Allison's power header from Stanhope's corner gave Trinity a 2-0 lead at half time. Bassinder, on for Brown provided Ellington with a third after 10 minutes of the second half and the match was over at that point, as Watts and ranshaw finished off Bridge. Gary Ingham making his third debut for Trinity had little to do, a couple of good saves and several authoritative catches marked his return. Phil Brown and Ellington both went off with knocks, and Brown's looked a particularly nasty ankle injury, and its unlikely he will play at Hyde on Monday. Ellington could be rested too.

Latest news 6/9/01

Trinity improved their record to 50% with a comfortable 4-1 win over Premier League new boys Bradford on Tuesday. Lee Ellington put Trinity one up with a superb individual goal, only to see a quickly taken Bradford free kick equalise. John Reed finished superbly after some quick passing making it 2-1 at half time. Martin made a couple of good saves while at the other end subs Holmes and Watts took advantage of good work by Hurst and Stanhope to ensure the points.

A rumour suggested that keeper Steve Wilson, who played for Trinity pre-season may be coming to the Northolme. Currently, he is with Macclesfield.

Latest news 2/9/01

Trinity showed a much improved attitude and therefore display on Saturday, but lost out to a confident looking Burton Albion outfit, who have the knack of scoring at just the right time. A goal after 5 minutes rocked the Blues, and they were just starting to come back into it when Burton doubled their lead after 35 minutes after uncertain work by Kev Martin. Trinity came out in the second half and got stuck in scoring 2 in 2 minutes through Allison and Ranshaw. Trinity were again getting on top, but 2 goals in the last quarter from Burton sealed their win.

Trinity had replaced Bassinder with Stanhope, and dropped Linighan in favour of Allison for this game. Leaking 4 goals is worrying, and we must be looking for maximimum points from our next 2 home games against Bradford on Tuesday, and Bamber Bridge on Saturday.

Latest news 28/8/01

Trinity lost 2-0 at home to Worksop, in abysmal fashion, continuing the style of play and attitude they showed at Emley 2 days earlier. This is not good enough. They can play well, they have the collective ability to be a good team, but something is wrong. So, if they can't be bothered to put in the effort, neither can I.

"FROM BOTH ENDS" has existed for over 4 years, but will be suspended until Trinity begin to play properly. I shall be at Burton on Saturday, and hopefully normal service will be resumed after this game. If effort is lacking, I won't bother.

Latest news 26/8/01

25/8/01

Emley 2 Trinity 1 (Reed) (ht 1-0)

Trinity made one change, bringing back Brian Linighan for Neil Allison, but failed to rise to the challenge of playing one of the UPL's top teams. Trinity went behind for the first time this season when Day headed in a simple goal. Trinity tried to get back in the match, and Watts headed over when it seemed easier to score. Ellington went on a great run, was brought down in the area, only for ref Bennett to strangely give an indirect free kick. Trinity claimed 2 more penalties before the break when Hall was brought down (just outside according to the ref) and when Wood seemed to handle. Emley had the best of the second half, then Martin had to make one good save, but couldn't save Bambrook's 75th minute shot. John Reed scored an excellent solo goal after 80 minutes, but despite a couple of good runs by Bassinder, Trinity failed to come up to scratch against one of the UPL's toughest opponents.

Trinity now have 2 tough games coming up: the local derby versus Worksop on Monday (ko 7.30pm apparently) and at Burton Albion on Saturday September 1st.

Latest news 22/8/01

Scarborough need a centre half, now they let Ellender go to Boston. Maybe Linighan will be a target. Let's hope not.

21/8/01

Hucknall Town 1 Trinity 4 (Gore,Watts, Ellington, P.Brown) (ht 0-1)

Another good performance, but still better to come , we think. Two changes with Allison in for the unavailable Linighan, and Wattsy preferrerd to Ranshaw up front.Ian Gore opened the scoring after about 25 minutes, after fairly constant Trinity pressure. He copied Paul Watts's Saturday overhead kick, after Hucknall failed to clear a corner. Kev Martin had one real save to make, just before half time, but Trinity were totally on top. In the second half Watts scored with a simple far post header after good work from Stanhope, Lee Ellington got clear and beat McCarthy with a firm shot on his near post, and then Phil Brown topped another excellent game with a coolly taken goal from the edge of the area. Trinity then began to cruise, although Gavin Bassinder wnet on some good runs, but allowed Hucknall a goal when Martin seemed to be fouled when he went up with one their big lads.

Still, TOP OF THE LEAGUE, and looking good !!!!!!

Greg Fee came on for about 20 minutes, but the large Blues gathering were kind to him. Stick to the Office job Greg, is what I say.

Latest news 19/8/01

I missed virtually all the friendly games due to a holiday in Canada and the USA, but it seems that the boys played well to the extent of winning all the games (bar 1) scoring 20 goals and conceding none. The one 0-0 draw came against Grantham in the Lincs Cup, and we lost on penalties. Scorers of the 20 goals were Watts 5, Ranshaw 5, Ellington 4, Hurst 3, Phil Brown, Holmes and Bassinder 1 each.

From last year Trinity released Rob Debenham, Mark Donnelly and Chris Newton, and new signings ended up as Joby Gowshall (Boston), Andrew Stanhope (Boston). Phil Brown (Kettering), Chris Hurst (Frickley), Rick Ranshaw (Grantham) and Wayne Hall (York City). A strong squad of 18 is now available to Phil Tingay who gave credit to Director of Football Frank Nicholson who attracted new players to The Northolme in the face of strong opposition. Steve Circuit will not be availaable for 3 months, as he is training to be a firefighter.

Full squad in Trinity's squad

Ex Trinity manager news: Ernie Moss has taken over at Matlock Town, Leighton James has been scaked by Port Talbot, and Greg Fee has signed for Hucknall Town. Early chance to give him some "friendly" stick on Tuesday.

Steve Curry is playing for Lincoln Utd, as is Richard Taylor. Kev Riley played a couple of games for Utd, but was then sacked for a "bad attitude". Fancy that.

Paul Ellender has moved from Scarborough to Boston for £60,000.

18/8/01

Trinity 5 (Reed pen,P.Brown 2, Hurst, Watts) Accrington Stanley 2 (ht 2-0)

A very good game for Trinity with all 14 playing well. Ellington was fouled for an early penalty, then Phil Brown volleyed in a marvellous 20 yarder just before the break. Brown was again on target early in the second half from Ellington's excellent ball, before Accrington scored to make it 3-1. Trinity came back straight away and Chris Hurst scored with a screamer. Accrington then scored from the spot after a foul from Man of the Match Linighan, but sub Paul Watts restored the margin with a cheeky overhead kick. Stanhope was impressive with some fine runs and crosses, and hit the woodwork, while the whole defence looked very solid, and Kev Martin had only one serious save to make. Scary thing was that Trinity didn't rip Accrington apart, and looked like they could step up a couple of gears if necessary. Next four games will be vital: away at Hucknall and Emley, home to Worksop, and a trip to Burton.

Thought of the week: A couple of interesting ex-Trinity players facing us the next 2 games: Fee of Hucknall and Norbury and Lacey of Emley. All of these left us in acrimonious circumstances, and a Norbury v Gore/Linighan confrontation could be interesting. And if you are going to Hucknall don't forget to let Greg know how much you enjoyed the first 10 weeks of last season.

Latest news 22/7/01

Trinity beat Staveley MW 2-0 with a goal in each half from Chris Hurst and Paul Watts. Tingay made 9 changes at half time.

Players in the "first" team included Steve Wilson (GK), Danny Brown, Linighan, Gore, Phil Brown, Reed, Hurst, Ellington, and Ranshaw. Second team had Martin in goal with Watts and Newton up front. Bassinder also played. Hurst looked a real capture, while Ranshaw added some much need muscle to the front. Phil Brown looked a class above, laying on the first goal with an astute pass. Linighan and Gore were as solid as ever, and both keepers made good stops. Newton has had a number one, Wattsy took his goal well, and Gavin Bassinder set him up for it, but otherwise looked very relaxed. Several others playing, but no-one really took my eye. A competent performance, and we looked especially sharp in the first half. Its obvious we are going to try to play it on the ground again.

In other news, Simon Drayton has signed for Brigg Town, while Trinity will have to manage without Steve Circuit for the first 3 months of the season as he completes hids firefighters training. Nicky Limber (now with Frickley) has had to retire due to back problems.

Latest news 13/7/01

Trinity have signed Rick Ranshaw, a 31 year old forward from Grantham Town. It will be Ranshaw's second spell with Trinity.

Evening kick offs will be at 7.45pm this season, and the club have announced that there will be no increase in admission charges this year.

Latest news 8/7/01

Trinity announced that they will play Nationwide Division 1 side Wolverhampton Wanderers in a friendly game at some point this season as exclusively revealed by "From Both Ends" on 22nd June. Manager Dave Jones has promised to bring a strong side to the Northolme, and the game could be played at a weekend when international games disrupt the League programme.

Trinity announced the signing of Andrew Stanhope from Boston Utd, who can play in midfield, or up front. The Blues are chasing a couple of other players, one of whom is said to be Rick Ranshaw, a forward, who has played for us before.

Trinity's first FA Cup opponents will have to travel to the Northolme in the 2nd Qualifying round on september 29th. They will be one of Sheffield, Dunston Federation Brewery, Armthorpe MW, or Hallam. However, Trinity have a tough tie at Ilkeston Town on November 1st in the 1st round of the FA Trophy, with another away tie at Hyde or Ossett if they overcome their Derbyshire opponents.

Trinity will begin the 01-02 Unibond campaign with a home game versus Accrington Stanley on August 18th. They then have 2 away games at Hucknall on Tuesday August 21st, and at Emley on August 25th. A home game to Worksop Town will be played on Bank Holiday Monday August 27th.

The list of pre-season games grows:

21/7 (Sat) Stavely MW (a) 3pm

27/7 (Fri) Belper Town (a) 7.30pm

1/8 ( Weds) Grantham (Lincs Cup) (h) 7.30pm

4/8 (Sat) Lincoln Utd (a) 3pm

6/8 (Mon) Mansfield Town (h) 7.30pm

11/8 (Sat) Doncaster Rovers (h) 3pm

There will also be home games against Chesterfield and Sheffield Utd

Latest news 22/6/01

Phil Brown has moved from Kettering to become Phil Tingay's assistant for the 2001-02 season. Brown has also registered as a player. Trinity fans will remember Brown as a member of Ernie Moss's succesful team of 4 years ago.

Don't be surprised if Trinity announce a friendly with Wolverhampton Wanderers, either for this season or next.

Also heard a rumour that we have signed another one from Boston, where there are stories, yet again, that Big Gob Evans has gone to Peterborough. Unlikely to be true actually.

Latest news 9/6/01

Trinity have signed Joby Gowshall, a defender, from Boston Utd, and Chris Hurst, who plays in midfield, from Frickley. No official news yet on the Phil Brown situation, but Trinity have said they expect to make more signings.

Latest "news" 28/5/01

Depending on who you listen to, Phil Tingay's new assistant/coach could be David Hirst, the recently retired Steve Charles, Kettering's Phil Brown, or a surprise return for Lee Turnbull, now at Barrow. Speaking of Browns, it seems unlikely that Danny "ineligible" Brown will keep his place at the Northolme, especially as Trinity are after Boston's Joby Gowshall. However, the highly rated defender is known to be talking to other clubs, (whispers are King's Lynn and Stevenage), so let's hope that Trinity are also in there with a good offer.

Other Gossip,Whispers and Rumours.

Unlikely that Brian Linighan will be playing for the Blues next season, as he has taken a job in Hartlepool.

Trinity's Lee Ellington has been watched by Port Vale, Huddersfield and Bristol Rovers. Expect an offer soon, probably from Port Vale.

Gavin Bassinder showed no long term effects from his eye injury at Marine, while Neil Allison should be fit for next season, even after finding himself in the next hospital bed to Paul "Gazza" Gascoigne. (This one seems a bit far fetched to me)

Leek may be saved from relegation as Blyth and Colwyn Bay struggle to keep going. Or they could be replaced by either of Ilkeston Town or Stafford Rangers.

Ex Trinity forward "Mad" Mick Norbury seems likely to turn up in the UPL as Emley are trying to sign him.

Doncaster Rovers (used to be in the Nationwide League) will bring a strong team to the Northolme on August 11th. (Not a rumour. Fact)

Latest news 19/5/01

Phil Tingay has been confirmed as Trinity's manager. However, he will have to do without Nick Limber and Steve Curry, who have both been released by the club, and also Steve Charles who has retired. However, John Reed, Steve Circuit, Ian Gore and Alex Allen have all signed new 2 year contracts.

Trinity will face old adversaries Burton Albion in the UPL next year. The Nigel Clough led Brewers make the sideways move from the Doc Martens League, where they had a very good season, finishing second.

Trinity will play Grantham Town in the Lincs Senior Cup, presumably in August.
