Waiting
for the Bus
The small section at the beginning of the film caused more trouble
and longer debates than any other part, and as such there are
many scenes that have fallen by the wayside including the opening
shot (as seen at the top of this page), and these traffic lights. |

The
Car Advert
One of the biggest mistakes in making the film, was spending
far too long on the advert section. At one point we had enough
material for about two minutes; but in the end it was edited
down to 15 seconds. Lost scenes included a complete race tack
with pit stops, wind tunnel, mansion house with golf course
and Coventry shopping centre! |

Ever Changing Europe
Europe is the one section that is very different to how it
was proposed. The original idea was to have a far more 'montage'
feel to the section, using old family photographs and small
elements of 3D modelling. The main problem was that, even
though we had hundreds of family slides, very few of them
were of high enough quality to fill a cinema screen.
We also
found that the section was becoming very messy especially
when the various elements were animated. We reached a point
when it was decided to build Europe in the same way as the
rest of the film, and that the family would be placed into
the scene as if they were actually there.

The
European Table Tops
Another idea to get the family photographs into the picture,
was to have them lying on cafe table tops across Europe. There
were many of these scenes produced, but when it came to editing
the section it was found that they slowed the pace down, and
that most people didn't even notice the photographs, let along
the other bits of detail. |

Service
Station
The idea of the pinball machines was to emphasise that the children's
tastes had grown-up. The only problem was that we couldn't find
any images of the children that would fit into the scenes. This
meant that the machines looked a bit strange playing by themselves
and so they were dropped. |

Gas
Domes
The images from the motorway section are very much in my original
style of modelling; dark and industrial. Because I found this
section enjoyable and easy to do, I ended up producing loads
of scenes that we just didn't have space for. The Gas Domes
is the one image I wished was still in the film. |

The
English Seaside
This image was made very early on. It used to appear in the
'Back Home' section when the story included a section of holidays
at the local seaside resort, after the family car had stopped
working. |

Caravans!
And finally caravans. For some strange reason when I'm making
a film I always end up building a caravan and trying to shoehorn
it in somewhere. They are just very good symbols for 'going
nowhere in life'. Unfortunately they didn't make it this time. |
