Robert Palmer - Clients & Biography

Robert Palmer- Biography

After studies at the Brooks Institute, USA, Robert returned to the UK and helped set up Keishi Colour lab processing. On receiving a job offer the next four years were spent as assistant to still-life photographer Richard Manning (of Benson and Hedges advert fame).

The last ten years have been spent as freelance photographer, firstly at a studio in Lever St, then refurbishing a derelict building in Stoke Newington which had in its previous incarnations been an artificial Christmas tree factory and then printing works into Lighthaven Studios seven years ago.

Clients

Images of lorries, shot on location in Wales for British Petroleum were used for advertisement and brochures. Robert embraced the 6X17 Alpa-rota panoramic camera as a new way of capturing images on location, the camera is capable of a complete 360 degrees of rotation. Amongst the many projects for which Robert has been commissioned are; advertising posters for Outspan, corporate brochures for IBM and Courtaulds, 48 sheet posters for Commercial Union , a campaign for fashion designer Jasper Conran, part of a TV ad for Debenhams and commissions for Coca-Cola and British Telecom.

Location work

In addition to UK locations, overseas location work include a shoot for Debenhams in Miami and projects in Prague, Dusseldorf and Spain.

Digital Capture

Within the last year commercial imperatives have necessitated the move to digital photography. Robert has been using the Photophase II scanning camera back for digital image capture which is capable of capturing images of up to 136 megabytes in size. This has been used for catalogue work, still life and brochures for Debenhams. The advantage of this new system is the ability to output from camera straight to proof via the new generation of inkjet printer which significantly increases the speed of the process. There is the ability to work directly with the repro house as images can be transported on an external hard drive, downloaded and proofed directly. Another advantage is that there is a latitude of 10 stops with these digital images, compared with 7 for a negative or less than three for a transparency.

Finally Robert is keen to stress that he doesn't want to pigeonhole himself or be pigeonholed as a photographer and believes that a photographer should be able to handle any challenge that is presented to him.
