ODDS AND ENDS

AND LINKS

Different growing conditions are provided in the garden to suit the requirements of different plants. We have areas specifically for the growing of Auriculas, two greenhouses and a shade house. A bog garden for the Californian irises, arum and a giant cowslip. A peat garden for the hydranges, rhododendron, crinodendron and gentian. A roof garden grows sedums, house leeks an iris and an alpine pink. Climbers grow wherever there is space to attach them. A winter garden accommodates most of the hellebores and some of the snowdrops.

A sheltered corner in the garden provides the ideal space for Derek to grow the tallest flower he has ever grown from seed.

The Cardiocrinum gigantium took seven years from seed to flower. It spent all of this time growing in a pot which increased in size  as the plant did before being planted out in the garden. Offset bulbs are produced every year, some are removed and given away though enough are left behind to ensure there will be flowers every year. The top of the flower will often be ten feet from the ground

Our garden is not totally enclosed as can be seen by the view at the front over towards the sea banks in the winter snow and the view at the back during a Lincolnshire summer sunset.

Lastly one of the pleasures of resting from showing Harry Leighton and Derek Salt enjoying the lack of pressure on show day.
