NOTES CD1 - What
Have They Done To My Song, Ma? and Ring
The Living Bell are the original versions though the latter doesn’t sound
right and could be slightly speeded up and may be from a poor source. Mr.
Tambourine Man and Carolina On My Mind are both re-mixes of the
originals with added instrumentation. Both are poor sound quality with Mr.
Tambourine Man being particularly bad. Baby Guitar and Beautiful
People are both 1999 re-recordings originally released on the Beautiful
People CD (BT 33023). Perceive It, Sandman, Meet Me On
The Corner and Almost Like Being In Love are all from Sunset
and Other Beginnings. California Dreaming and Let It Be Me are
from Phonogenic. Unchained Melody is from Unchained. Live
Coal is from Silver Anniversary. Prematurely Grey is a
version recorded during the LowCountry sessions, but was not included
on the album. Long Train Runnin' is a different mix than previously
released versions, with a male vocal (Beau?) taking a more prominent part. CD2 - People Are Just Getting Ready, What Do I Keep, You Can't Hurry Love/Mama Said, Loving My Children and Where's The Band are from Sunset and Other Beginnings. Bitterblue and Missing You are from Unchained. Freedom Knows My Name, Record Machine and Rock And Roll Heart are from Silence Is King/Freedom Knows My Name. Life Will Not Go Away, Close To It All, Cyclone and Lay Down - Candles In The Rain are from Silver Anniversary. Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow and Stop! I Don't Want To Hear It are 1999 recordings released on the Beautiful People CD (BT 33023). CD3 - Nickel
Song is the original version but re-mixed with additional
instrumentation. Those Were The Days is a previously unreleased
version, different to the version that appears on Moments From My Life.
Brand New Key and Someday I’ll Be A Farmer are 1999
re-recording released on the Beautiful People CD (BT 33023). The
Sun Will Always Shine On You And Me was previously released as Shine
On. I've Got My Mojo Working,
The Sun And The Moon and Afraid Of The Dark are from Sunset
and Other Beginnings. Peace Will Come and Purple Haze are
from Silver Anniversary. Knock On Wood is from Phonogenic.
Please Love Me is original Buddah recording. Every Breath You Take
is from Unchained. If My Heart Should Lose Its Way is the
LowCountry version. A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall is from Silence Is
King. Ruby Tuesday (Pop Mix) was previously released as single. So in summary what do you actually get here? First of
all you get the entire Sunset and Other Beginnings album (US version -
no Ol' Man River), most of which has never been available on CD
before. Secondly you get some rare tracks, an unreleased recording of Those
Were The Days, a remix of Long Train Runnin, Knock On Wood
on CD for the first time and a rare version of Prematurely Grey. A
smattering of tracks from recent re-recordings which have all been available
before and finally some rather badly re-mixed older recordings. In conclusion, this is a budget priced boxed set and it
feels like it. The sound quality for the majority of tracks is good, but the
set is let down by some poor versions of older material and the re-mixes of
the older Buddah material add nothing. No thought has been given to
programming the songs either by musical style or genre, the tracks do not
flow (Knock On Wood followed by Please Love Me is a prime
example) and the whole thing has a feeling of being thrown together.
Hopefully, one day, a record company will put together a quality boxed set
that documents Melanie’s career of more than 30 years. Sadly this is not it. |
