Quantock Long O 2004 -Holford

Planners/Organisers Comments

Thank you all for coming, especially if it was your first time on this event. By now hopefully you are all fully recovered. Over the last few years, we have experienced most extremes of foul weather for this event, and nobody would have expected to experience the other extreme you all suffered on Sunday. As navigation is easier, due to the extensive track network in this part of the Quantocks, I made the courses tougher physically with lots of climbs to compensate. This kind of backfired on the day due to the intense heat with an unexpectedly high retiral rate, particularly on long. I can only offer my sympathy and add that I hope that if you did have to retire, then that you enjoyed the amount of your courses you actually completed. To those that did persevere, congratulations especially to the various course winners. To those winners who left before the final results were known, we will send your trophies on in the near future.

Some people seemed to experience dibber problems on the day. This may have been due to in-experience with the system or a possible problem due to sweat from the competitor contaminating the dibber contacts causing malfunctions. There were no problems with the actual controls, and we are investigating the sweat scenario. Manual punch backups were provided and have been checked. If you feel there is a mistake above please contact Bill on 01823-680679 and we will try to rectify.

The event was run with the normal minimum number of helpers as follows. To these I am eternally grateful. Firstly to Bill for all the mapping, electronics and results, to Trevor once again for supportive yet non-intrusive controlling, to Christine and Lennox in the kitchen, Kevan for manning the lonely midway control and to Rosie for relieving me of normal household duties in order to free up the time necessary to plan and organise an event of this nature.

After several years now, the event format is more or less firmly established. Certainly we will be back next year-hopefully back to our later slot in mid-October when it’s a little cooler! The distances and climbing won’t ease, but the venue will be different. I hope to see you there.
