Overall results for Score Events 2003
Planner/Organiser's Comments: Firstly, and yet again, thank you for turning up and making all the work worthwhile. Thank you to Bob LLoyd and Lennox Heath for helping me on the day, to Bill Vigar for going round with me last week to make sure the map reflected what was on the ground and finally to the 'control collecters in'.
I have been a great believer in the score event format because it allows people to suit themselves how much they do and still enables them to get a result plus it's relatively easy to plan/organise. I do not believe, as some have suggested, that it is bad for technique because you have to think and make decisions under pressure and navigate to control site some of which will be quite technical. My only reservations are the inexperienced youngsters of Yellow standard because they are having to make more complex decisions than they have been used to; White standard people do need to be shadowed and perhaps treat the day as a training exercise. From the comments I have received I think the Score Events have been a success. It was very much an experiment which I thought I would try out this summer and all being well continue in years/months to come. We already have a couple of provisional dates for next year.
This second event was more straightforward than the first event but the area is much tougher, at least until you get out of the Coombes!! I had divided the total points available for seniors equally between the two sides of the valley with the southern side involving more track running for those who fancied it and didn' feel inclined to take on both sides of the valley. My idea in score events is to go out and tackle the far off controls first collecting some intermediate controls on the way and then work my way back giving myself as many options as possible at the end. It was this philosophy that dictated the layout. I envisaged the very fit would start in the North with 6, 7, 15, 16 and finish on 19 then go over to 18 on the south side and do as many as possible over there dependant on the time left of course. I think the highest scorers more or less followed that philosophy. There were some impressive performances over the two days particularly Henry White who achieved a spectacular negative on day two and caused much merriment in the car park afterwards! Those of you who didn't take part on the two days should ignore the overall results because far more points were available on the first score event than the second.
If I have made any mistakes in the results do let me know as soon as possible and I will correct them. Subject to that the overal winners for the two days are
Overall winner Will Kromhout Devon who was only 15 points shy of a maximum

Junior winner Robbie White BOK
