Quantock Forest League 4 - Ladies Wood 8 Jan 2006

Planner's Comments

Thanks to Debs for volunteering me at a committee, it was a pleasure to be able to plan an event at Ladies’ Wood (always known as the old Oak wood to me) as it has always been my favourite terrain for walking, running, mountain biking and trying to spot those elusive deer. Thanks are owed to all who helped me especially Mike for his experience, Bill for his wonderful mapping and Roger and Judy (the frail one!). In retrospect I regret bringing some of the courses out in to the open for the last kilometre as the weather made this experience quite unpleasant. It was very rewarding to see such a good turn out considering the conditions and I didn’t hear to many unfavourable comments at the finish. This was my last chance to plan in the Northern Hemisphere for sometime but we have every intention of continuing when we establish ourselves in New Zealand. A final note, I was so chuffed to see 6 deer prancing through the trees as I was checking controls on the morning of the event.

What a great turn out in such atrocious weather. At one stage I was considering taking the drastic step of abandoning the event. However this was not necessary as you all proved. Quite a few were wise and stepped down a course which made the loading on Light Green much higher than usual. Thank you to those who allowed us to recycle their maps and to those who used hastily drawn maps. A quick look at the results shows that the standard was about right. A greater number of retirals than usual was to be expected, there is no disgrace in taking the sensible option in those conditions. Thanks to Brett for challenging  courses and his assistants Roger and Judy  for their support and help in many ways. Bill Vigar was his usual tower of strength with map production.A big thank you to all the helpers who manfully stuck to their tasks and still managed to go out and run. Thanks also to those members, who although not part of the organising team offered to stay on in case there were any lost competitors.
