Planners Comments

Early supper-table planning went out the window when we found that the open hill top was surrounded by a well-kept stock-proof fence complete with barbed wire. This meant that any courses going onto the Common would have to pass both ways through the gate. So the Green and Light Green courses were not quite as ambitious as first hoped for, but most competitors appreciated the climb back up to the gate. Orange, Yellow and White courses kept to the hill top, and all courses went into the forest on the eastern side. Fortunately forestry work didn't (quite) obliterate all the control sites. The frozen ground also helped because, in previous weeks, the vehicle tracks had turned the area into a mudbath. My thanks to the controller for some excellent advice; we'd certainly like to do it again next season

The next Quantock Forest League Event is at Ham Hill (GR ST 481165) on Saturday15th February. Starts from 12.30 – 2.30 (Registration opens at 12.00). Details from Chris Philip (01823-252938)

Some Orienteers may be surprised to see that their age-group has changed. To quote Mike Crockett this is because ‘Orienteers like race horses are deemed to have their birthday on January 1st!’ Thus everyone goes up a year on that date irrespective of their actual birthdate!
