Maple Burr

With clear affinity to traditional Scots design of communal drinking vessels, otherwise known as "quaichs", this piece will hold "conversations" even better than it will liquid refreshment. The Pacific Maple burr (burl) from which it has been lovingly crafted is a rare and beautiful example of this outstanding timber. The basic honey-gold coloured heartwood is interpenetrated with a matrix of creamy-yellow sapwood which adds dynamic visual range to the form. With bark inclusions, stunning burr figure and a black line filigree from incipient spalting, this piece will reveal new aspects of its being every day. From its sturdy foot, through the beaded transition into the bowl form, and on up to the detailed rim, this is a piece that will reward examination and appreciation time and again.

The gently sloping sides are stepped just short of the mid-line and continue up to the rim of the shallow crater above. This piece was treated prior to wax polishing with Danish oil to enhance the strong grain pattern of the Elm.
