Courses

Miles, our Director of Training has informed us that the club will be running the following courses throughout the coming year:

RLSS Bronze Medallion
RLSS National Pool Lifeguard
RLSS Life Supports 1-3
SLSA Surf Lifeguard Award
SLSA Advanced Resuscitation

Anyone wishing to attend courses should contact Miles for further information. We cannot stress the importance of having as many qualified personnel as possible to enable the club to progress and grow.

We now have two more RLSS Trainer/Assessor - Paul Hindley and Francis Holman, and we hope to have two more by the end of the year.

We desperately need more qualified Lifeguards for beach patrols this year, so come on everybody, lets get fit and pass these exams. The club and the local community are relying on YOU !!

Also we would like to know of any courses that we can run as a club that would benefit our members. maybe some of you are skilled in other activities and would like to share these with us. Please feel free to contact Miles with any suggestions.

Activities

Jeff, our Secretary, is trying to organise some other activities for club members (and there friends) to do other than water based ones. So far he has come up with this: For those of you who have mountain bikes, an organised ride from the clubhouse, around Gus Common and back again. He rides there every other Sunday, so if you fancy a bit of muddy, all terrain cycling, be at the clubhouse ready to leave about 11:00am. (This is particularly good for junior and nipper members.) He is also looking into possibility of hiring the gym at the Grange school for an hour to do some circuit training, possibly on a Thursday evening before pool training. More details to follow as and when

On a more practical note, the clubhouse will need a coat of paint inside and out this year and as they say 'many hands make light work'. If you can spare a few hours over a weekend or two, Tony Wild will be organising this so please contact him on 01202 470034. The Management Committee are also looking into the possibility of extending the clubhouse in some way to accommodate skis and rescue craft in a separate area, thus leaving more room for training purposes. Any suggestions, advice or possible sources of funding would be greatly appreciated.

Juniors & Nippers

Welcome back. We hope you all had a good Christmas and are now ready for the year ahead

We will be starting the year by outlining what we hope to do throughout it. Courses that we will be running are as follows:

SLSA Junior Survival Award
SLSA Pool Training Award
SLSA Surf Competence
RLSS Lifesaving 1-3
RLSS Life Support 1
RLSS Bronze Medallion

It would be really good if you all give as much support and determination this year as you did in 1997. If we continue to grow as we have in the past, we could easily become one of the largest clubs in the region. This could be the year when we put Christchurch on the map for Junior Lifesaving.

You may have read on the last page that we are trying to come up with other activities for you to do (don't forget the mountain biking). If you think of something that we can organise that is fun and interesting, please tell us- after all if you do not tell us, we can't do it.

Competition News

RLSS Poole Lifeguards have advised us that they are holding the Under 15 Lifesaving Championship on 21st February 1998. Now don't panic - it's not as bad as it sounds. The events are for a team of four all held at the Dolphin Pool. We think that out of the juniors we have, we could enter a good team. If anyone would like to know more, or enter the team, see Jeff at the Thursday night session. If we can get a team together by mid-January, the club 4 will arrange extra pool time for training.

We have also been invited by Christchurch Round Table to enter a team in their "Youth Challenge '98" competition. There is a prize of 50 pounds for each team that enters, with the possibility of even more cash for the top three teams at the end of the day. Only 10 teams of up to 15 members between the ages of 8 and 16 are being invited to enter the competition.

Another activity we would like to hold this year is a club Junior/Nipper camp. Suggestions so far include a four day trip to Alton Towers, a week camping on the Isle of Wight and a week camping/surfing on the Devon coast. Again if anyone has any ideas then let us know. To give you a guide we are looking at three or four seniors with twelve youngsters, possibly in the second week of the Easter holiday or the first week of the summer holiday. The Surf Life Saving Association of GB has told us that they will be holding their annual Nipper camp (7-13 year old) at Torbay Holiday Park, Devon from 5th to the 7th June 1998. The cost is 40 pounds per person, further detail are you all available from the Club Secretary.

Gossip & Adverts

Well this being the first News Letter we are a bit thin on the ground when it comes to gossip (or adverts) so unfortunateiy the best we can come up with is to report that Craig Horton is now out of plaster and well on the road to recovery, after that unfortunate incident with the curb. Where on that occasion by accident, not design he suddenly reverted to the horizontal from the vertical. This we were led to believe was not caused by the affluence of inlcohol. Hard to swallow that. We urgently need more input for the next issue of gazette. If you have anything to say, sell or ask - the latest date for the next issue is 27th February.

And Finally
In Case of tidal wave:

Run - fast
