KareKano

Yukino The first thing that got me interested in this series was actually the producers. Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou (His and Her Circumstances) was produced by the (in)famous Gainax. I don't want to do a review of Evangelion since, despite quite liking the series, I am far from one of the world's greatest fans but some background is in order.

Evangelion was a 'big robots' show, consisting of young kids piloting huge humanoid robots to defeat the bad guys. Gainax, however, decided this wasn't enough so they added psychology to it. Lots and lots of psychology... You do not get kids more mixed up than these ones...

In contrast, the manga of KareKano is, to my knowledge, a stereotypical shoujo manga about the highschool romance of a girl called Yukino. Finding out that Gainax was going to do the animation for this series was therefore somewhat... interesting.

The result (as far as I can tell from watching four episodes) is superb. As could be guessed, Gainax changed the story (just a little...) from the original and added animation up to their usual standard. The background of the characters is far from happy-go-lucky and this is quite apparent from the story but, in typical anime style, this is balanced by hilarious sections and still results in characters you really want to get to know.

I just hope I can get my hands on more episodes soon!

The image above is the property of Gainax (includes an English section that can be browsed without Japanese text support no matter what IE thinks). They also have a page devoted to KareKano which makes very good reading and also contains more pictures of the characters.
