Mylor Yatch Harbour and the Falmouth Estuary
|
The Falmouth Estuary and and its tributairies is a fabulous place for small boat sailing with lots of open water, sheltered anchorages river creeks to explore and places of interest to visit. Mylor Yatch Harbour is a good base for daysailing from and offers excellent facilities. Access to MYH is via Truro and Mylor Bridge and the descent to the harbour is steep. You will need a good tow car to escape! Facilities for launching are a new free public slip (picture right) and you can launch 2 hrs either side of low water. Best to avoid weekends when it can be busy. Car and trailer can be left in secure parking area for £20 and £15 per week respectively. If you wish to daysail from MYH then a pontoon mooring for the Brig will cost £86 for the week. Alternatively you could pay by the day if you are intending to spend some time in the Helford River. MYH has excellent showers, restaurant and cafe. It is a busy working boatyard with good chandlery and other engineering services. They handle a variety of traditional and modern craft and I find the boatyard activity fascinating. I have stayed at MYH for one week in May for the last 5 yrs. Leave it later and it will be too busy. Things you must do from MYH are visit the Helford River which is easily within a days reach even if you have to motor, take your Brig to Falmouth and moor up at the Visitors Yatch Haven (£6 for two hrs but they are very flexible out of season!) and go to the Maritime museum, and visit St Mawes. If the weather is not so good jump in the car and visit Gweek seal santuary, the Gweek boat yard, the Eden Project and other local gardens. Below Falmouth Yatch Haven from Maritime museum tower and below right Shrimper sailing off St Mawes Castle. |

| There are many quiet anchorages in the upper reaches of the Fal. I have never ventured past Malpas but if you play the tides you can get to Truro. You will find very large commercial vessels moored up river. I think they are awaiting maintenance and it is a good revenue source for the Port of Truro Authority. Visit the Smugglers Inn for lunch or strawberry cream tea. Anchor in Chanels Creek front of Trellissick House (NT) picture to right. Visit St Just in Roseland (picture below) and if you can get ashore the church is worth a visit. The River Percueil is a must and there are many anchorages but dont upset the locals as there are oyster beds! The picture below and right is Place and is opposite St Mawes. There is a small ferry which plies between St Mawes and Place and if you flag them down or contact the Harbour Master they will pick you up. It does cost £5 return though! If you go ashore at Place you can walk the coastal path to St Anthonys Head and lighthouse....so I've read somewhere! This year we were visited by basking sharks which I later found out were frequent visitors and will do you no harm if you jump in and swim alongside them! |
