The size of the problem

On average 10-15 BGVs are re-homed each year. They come through rescue for various reasons but the main one is the fact that they are hounds. People are taken in by that lovely, cute puppy seen in magazines, in books, on the internet and even occasionally in TV programmes. They tend to buy thinking these are ideal family pets for everyone, not knowing about all the true hound traits. This is sometimes brought about by breeders not being completely frank with potential buyers. For example, there are a lot of people who don’t particularly want their walk extended by four hours because their hound has gone hunting! Being told at the outset that these are scent-hounds who, given half a chance, may be off on the track of something will help potential owners to decide whether this is the right breed for them – and possibly prevent a BGV from ending up in rescue.

Do your homework

No-one likes to see a BGV going from one home to another because the new owners didn’t realise what having one was all about. So, if you are considering having this breed, please don’t rush out and buy one but do your homework first so that you know exactly what you are buying. There are information leaflets available and many breeders who will be only too happy to tell you all they know about the breed or invite you to see their hounds.

 Letter from a new owner

"I've been meaning to write to let you know how Freeway is getting on. We had a few problems with our old Retriever at the beginning but he is lovely with him now. He is one of the naughtiest dogs I know! He always has one of the children's toys and when I'm hanging the washing out it is always one sock for the line and one down the end of the garden!

Freeways basket is in the kitchen, but as soon as as the lounge door is open he's straight in on the settee, usually with his head buried down the back just in case a sweet has dropped down there. As for obedience, he becomes suddenly deaf when when I say "in the kitchen" or "here" when I'm walking him with his lead off.

It is nearly a year since you rang and said Freeway needed a new home. I was so excited when I got your call and it was the best thing that could of happened. He is a gentle, lovable dog with such character that not one of us in the family would want to be with out him!

Thank you

"Dear Rose,
I am very happy in my new home. I get lots of walks and we go for lots of car rides. We have been on holiday to Devon with lots of good sniffs on the beach. I have sent you a photo of me in the garden trying to be good, which does not happen very often!

lots of woofs,

Poppy

p.s. new mum and dad, Carol and Al, send their best wishes."
