EastEnders: 20 Years in Albert Square (BBC Books 2005)
There was a distinct lack of ballyhoo around the 20th birthday of BBC1’s
long-running soap – the show was, in fact, going through a bit of a crisis
at the time, and nobody was in the mood for a celebration. The result was that
this book got a lot of attention in the press as the only official output to
mark the anniversary.
I spent months trawling through the synopses of every single episode of
EastEnders ever broadcast, and nearly went mad in the process, but the result is a
definitive guide to who did what to whom in Albert Square from 1985 to 2005. If you
can’t remember the name of Arthur’s posh mistress, or you long to relive
Walford’s first gay kiss, this is the book for you. There are also as many pictures
of Punk Mary as I could reasonably persuade them to include.
