Near Death Experiences
- Accounts of those who have returned from beyond deathIntroduction
Does the after-life exist? Some people claim to have been there - and returned.
Our scientists & doctors claim that as we near death, certain chemicals are released by the brain that create a form of euphoria and calmness. This they suggest leads to the individual having hallucinations and could account for the visions often reported by those who have been through the near death experience. This, at least initially, sounds plausible but for the fact that hallucinations are more likely to be unique for each individual. According to studies of those that have experienced a near death episode, this would seem not to be the case. The accounts are all very similar and often have a profound and lasting effect on those concerned. Furthermore even young children have described the same things experienced by adults. Why is it that those who had no previous religious beliefs find their lives forever altered and set on new path?
Read some fascinating accounts of people who have died and returned to tell their story of what they saw.
Shirley Wood (1987)
Shirley's story actually started some three months prior to her near death experience. In 1987, having gone to bed and switched off the light, she found she was able to see through her right closed eye. It was not the bedroom she saw but another location she did not recognise, she felt herself drifting around this place with just a simple thought.
However it was on the 17th May 1987 that the NDE occurred. While preparing the Sunday lunch for her family, she was suddenly struck by a sharp pain in her chest. Her cries were heard by her husband who came rushing in to find out what was wrong. Now gasping for air and holding her chest she was helped to the couch in the lounge. Her lack of oxygen became worse and she felt herself slipping into darkness, yet throughout she was conscious, the pain faded away to be replaced by a calm and peaceful sensation. It was then that she realised she was outside of her own body, drifting and floating.
The darkness enveloped her but she felt herself rising, soon she was joined by a human figure who seemed to be holding her hand. As they continued moving, now in a forward direction, the figure became filled with excitement and joy. The figure was telling her of a wonderful bright light and that heaven was just up ahead. The joy and happiness she felt filled her entire being and was like no experience on earth.
They both stood waiting for the bright light to appear, but it didn't. She felt the frustration from the figure with her as they waited, but still it did not appear. Then the figure seemed to escort her back the way they had come, until finally she was reunited with her body. The whole episode had lasted about twenty minutes.
Shirley is now convinced that life continues, and although she had been allowed to witness part of the journey, her life here on earth was not finished. She now sees dying not as the end but the beginning.
Durdana (1968)
Two-and-half year old Durdana became very ill, so ill in fact that she had fits of vomiting, blindness and even became paralysed. Till on one occasion her father received a call to return home immediately, rushing to his young daughter's side there appeared to be no sign of life in the child. With his experience as an army doctor he began emergency resuscitation, but thinking to himself that it was already too late.
His efforts paid off, eventually the child started to respond, although she had effectively died for around 15 minutes! It was a few later that Durdana started to talk of where she had been during her 15 minutes. With great precision she described a garden with apple trees, grapes & pomegranates. She spoke of streams of different colours and how while she was there she saw and spoke to her grandfather and his mother. How they hugged until she could hear her own father calling "Come back my child, come back." She then told her grandfather that she must go back, to which he replied we must ask God. So they did! God said "Do you want to go back?" "Yes, I must, my daddy is calling me." Durdana replied. She then explained a feeling of falling down until she found herself on a bed with her father beside her.
