This most fascinating form of mediumship concerns helping wayward spirits find their way.
Introduction
My first experience of a rescue occurred in a medium development circle and was quite intense. It seems, for some reason, a small minority of people pass into spirit with some confusion. Although most pass quite happily and are greeted by their loved-ones who guide them forward, there are a few who find themselves confused and bewildered. There may be many reasons for this and some views have suggested that the individual is unable to accept their own passing, thereby staying close to the earth plane. This is perhaps understandable in some ways, as the soul has been used to life in the physical world and would therefore find it more familiar.
But I consider this to be a short time and soon the spirit person will look for light. He may see this light emanating from a spiritual development circle for example and be drawn to it. A medium will be aware of the spirit person and gently speak to him and understand his dilemma. The medium with his knowledge of such matters will guide the spirit person directing him to look for a bright light. He will be told of the beauty inside and that there will be familiar people waiting to greet him.
As the spirit person passes through the light there is such a feeling of beauty and immense love it is almost overwhelming. A great feeling of relief comes to the medium, a sign of gratitude perhaps from the spirit person.
There are mediums who specialise in this work, a very worthy but less recognised spiritual pursuit. One of the more well known rescue mediums is Eddie Burks from Nottinghamshire, England. He explains these earth-bound spirits being caused by violent death, fear, obsessive attachment to earthly possessions and other similar reasons.
We can only speculate as to why this happens, but perhaps it is essential to the development of all those who experience it.

There are many different kinds of rescue mediumship, all, we are sure, as effective as the method that we use. We are not only concerned for the spirit we have been sent to help, but also in helping the person in the body that is experiencing the problems. When we are working on a rescue, we work very closely with our guides, on a one to one with the sprit concerned. We must emphasise that in our experience a spirit cannot be forced to leave. In such circumstances, we can only coax them towards the light and the next dimension. Some spirits will hang around the earth plane due to the nature of their passing (see Thomas Irwell story below). A murder victim may find it difficult to adapt, or a very sudden death. These spirits can be helped by a rescue medium, and also by their loved ones in the spirit world. Our methods are usually successful because we have so much help from the spirit side. They will work with us to help to coax the traumatized spirit towards the light (see the story of the child molester below). However, if a spirit refuses to move on, then we simply tell them that they can stay, but they will not be allowed to be disruptive and disturb people in their everyday lives on the earth plane. This is because there are laws in the spirit world just as there are laws here. We chat with our guides about the problem and they agree to get help from the spirit world to help guide the disruptive spirit and to try and convince them that when they are ready to move on they will get help. This usually works in such a situation.
Some rescue mediums prefer to sit in groups. They meet in a designated room at a certain time every week and send out thoughts out to any spirit that might need help. Healing is also sent out to the troubled spirits. Although we have not sat in a rescue circle, prefering to work direct, we believe that any form of rescue work conducted in a responsible and experienced manner, is helpful.
Other mediums can work long distance by voice contact on the telephone, and sending out thoughts to that person in the body at a certain time. Suggesting that the person also sit and meditate at that time. Depending on the circumstances, which our guides usually direct, spirit friends will gather at the home where the problem is and work from that end. We have worked in such a way and have had considerable success.
We feel that our work is very important to us and there are not enough rescue mediums around. Anyone finding themselves in a situation whereby there is an unwanted presence, should contact a medium with a good understanding of the situation, such as a rescue medium. Any situation needs specialist care and help. Sometimes a difficult case can take several weeks to sort out.
Recently we have found our work changing slightly. We now find that we are being called by spirit to help them sort out how they passed to the spirit world, and to solve problems surrounding the passing. They all seem to have stories to tell (see the case of Emily Millington below). So we are now styling ourselves as detectives for the deceased.
Thomas Irwell.
Thomas was a farmer who had lived on the earth plane in 19th C. He was still protecting his farm from landlords who wanted it back -130 years later. He set fire to the cowsheds to put them off, but the plan backfired when a young farm hand called Edward was burnt to death. His presence was still roaming the farm causing all sorts of problems for the family that were living in the farm house. Thomas was so traumatised and wracked with guilt, searching for Edward, that he was blinded to the fact that he should move onwards. Once we assured him that Edward was Ok, he eventually went towards the light, in what was a very emotional rescue job.
Story of Frank the child molester.
Frank was an extremely nasty spirit, who when he had lived on the earth plane had been a child molester. In spirit, he was terrorising the family living in the house with banging noises, slamming doors, frightening the children by lifting them out of bed and placing them on the floor and generally being a nuisance.
We went to the house 3 times before we eventually helped him over. The most fascinating factor was that a child actually came forward to guide him towards the light. He wept like a baby in her arms, and she took him very gently, to our great relief.
Emily Millington
We were asked to investigate a haunting in a fairly new business property on an industrial estate. Several people had seen a lady in a dark cloak on the ground floor reception area. When we sat in the reception, a lady came forward from spirit and told us her name was Emily and she had a young girl with her. She was very agitated and showed us clairvoyantly, two small white cottages, which we were later able to find. Through names, dates and conditions of death, given to us from the lady and helpers in spirit, we were able to establish that the lady we had spoken to was Emily Ann Millington. We found out through the local newspapers that she had lived at a farm on the industrial estate, and she had committed suicide there in 1892. The little girl with Emily, we believe, is a child that she lost. There have been other strange deaths at the farm and at least one more suicide. This is at present an ongoing case.
We have many more fascinating investigations from the work we have done over the past 5 years, and are regularly contacted by people having trouble with spirit.
In every case above, we have been approached by the people concerned and the outcome has proved successful.
