Diana Camera original.

Low tech, high tech. Multiple exposures with Diana

It must be nearly twenty years since I first learnt about the Diana camera, on a workshop with artist Irene Reddish. A local community arts program with a strong bias towards photography had set it up and I decided to sign up for the weekend event. Up until this time I had never heard of the camera but my wife turned around saying she had had one since she was a child and it still might be around, we dug it out and off I went.

From the very start Irene had highlighted the cameras ability to easily make multiple exposures, as the camera s shutter never needed cocking, it was always ready for shooting. Irene s approach to image making was a very intuitive one

Years later when I got my first computer and was let loose on the world wide web I rediscovered this phenomenon, there were lots of like minded photographers out there using toy cameras such as Diana, this peeked my interest so I dusted her off once more. I now tend to carry her around with what ever camera I am using on the day, loaded with 400 iso film.

These days I have become a hybrid photographer, shooting onto film scanning then printing via the computer, but all this high tech stuff has not altered my approach to the image capture.
