10th April 2004 MARK TO CONTINUE AS CHAIRMAN OVERWHELMING support for Mark Kelly has seen him make a U-turn on his decision to step down as chairman of the Yeovil Town Independent Supporters’ Association. Mark announced a couple of weeks ago that he would be standing down as chairman, a post he has held since the YTISA was formed in 1999, at the end of the season. But Mark said he had been ‘touched’ by the messages of support from not only members but even Yeovil Town chairman and chief executive John Fry and that he had decided to carry on. “I initially wanted to step down and let somebody else with fresh ideas to take over which I thought would have been good for the association,” he said. “But I have been truly touched by the wonderful support of the group’s members and the enthusiastic encouragement of Mr Fry that I’ve decided to continue in the role.” And he joked: “I didn’t realise I was so popular and well-liked!” Mark made the announcement at a YTISA committee meeting held at Huish Park on Thursday (April 8) night. YTISA press officer Steve Sowden said Mark’s decision had come as a welcome surprise. “Mark seemed adamant that he would step down at the end of the season,” he said. “But I think Mark has been so moved by the support and backing he has received from members and the club itself that he had no alternative other than to carry on. “I think his decision has been warmly welcomed by the committee and I’m sure will be by the membership as a whole. Mark has been the lifeblood of the YTISA and with him still at the helm the group will continue to go from strength to strength.” Other items on the agenda were the replacement for Tony Elbourn who recently resigned from the committee as secretary due to increased work commitments. It was agreed that YTISA treasurer Stewart Bratherton would take on the secretarial duties until a successor had been found. It was agreed that new committee members had to be sought and they were open to suggestions from the membership. Anyone who would like to get more involved with the YTISA should phone chairman Mark Kelly on 01935-412236. |
1st April 2004 ASSOCIATION SECRETARY RESIGNS
The
news of Tony’s resignation comes as a blow to the association
with group chairman and founder, Mark Kelly, only recently announcing
he is to step down from the role at the end of the season. |
13th March 2004 THE chairman of the Yeovil Town Independent Supporters’ Association, Mark Kelly, has announced that he is to step down from the role at the end of the season. Mark, who was the founder of the YTISA in the summer of 1999, has taken the decision to allow fresh blood to take over the chairmanship. “This has not been an easy decision to make as the YTISA has been my baby,” he said. “But there comes a time when you feel that you’ve done all you can and that time is now. “I’ve enjoyed my role as chairman over the past five years, but I now feel that a fresh pair of legs are needed. “I would like to thank all the committee members and members – especially my wife Sara – for their continued support. Although I’m stepping down as chairman I will still continue to help out with the YTISA.” From the group’s early days, the YTISA has flourished and is fast approaching the 500-strong membership. The YTISA has made many donations to the football club over the past few years and was pivotal in the Erection 2000 Appeal to help fund the building of the roof above the home end terrace at Huish Park which reached a successful conclusion in April 2001. Letters explaining Mark’s decision to stand down have been sent to YTISA president Bryan W. Moore, Yeovil Town chairman John Fry and team manager Gary Johnson. The YTISA would like to publicly thank Mark for all his work over the years and although he is not someone you would call Mr Diplomacy, his enthusiasm and support for the club is second to none. YTISA press officer Steve Sowden said: “We are sure that Mark will continue to be at games both home and away to lend his ‘vocal’ encouragement to the players! “Mark has done a fantastic job as chairman of the YTISA. I can remember when I first got involved with the group that it just constituted Mark driving a minibus of supporters to away games while Yeovil were playing in the ICIS League. “From small seeds grow big trees they say and that is certainly the case for the YTISA. The group has grown from a minibus of supporters to a fleet of coaches heading for Villa Park and the FA Trophy Final – and that has been down to Mark’s efforts. “The group will miss Mark’s enthusiasm as chairman when he steps down at the end of the season, but we are glad that he has agreed to still lend his support to the association. I don’t think he would be able to take a back seat so easily.” And YTISA treasurer, Stewart Bratherton, added: “Mark has done a lot of hard work and we must ensure that we continue in the same direction.” Remaining committee members will be holding a meeting in the near future to discuss the way ahead, but a final decision on the new chairman will be dependant on a vote of the entire YTISA membership. |
