Hermione was eating breakfast when her parents sat either side of her. "Hermione, we have something to tell you." Sarah Granger spoke.
The young witch did not like that phase it meant problems. Usually for her.
"We've decided that since Voldemort is back." Her father Rupert sighed.
A mouthful of food shot across the kitchen. It stopped in middle air, when her mother raised a hand. The chewed food floated over to a bin and dropped into it.
"How?" Hermione gasped. "Did you?"
"We felt him take on physical form again." Her mother answered. "We're Wicca. We're powerful enough to threaten Voldemort."
"That means he'll come after you to force us not to interfere with his plans." Her farther spoke sternly .
"Wait!" Hermione gasped. "You can caste spells?"
"Different power source." Her father answered. "Your spells have been using personal magic. You have to generate the power yourself like all people, classified as witches and wizards that go to Hogwarts."
"Ours we channel a mixture of Universal and elemental energies." Her mother added. "Ours being you have this magic too. You just haven't used it."
"Anyway, back to the subject of what we've decided." Sarah continued. "You are going to stay with my sister Willow, until Voldemort is dealt with."
"What about my studies?" Hermione protested. "What about Harry? My cat?"
"Willow, as arranged that you continue your studies, with a Watcher, as far as Potions, History of Magic and Defence against the Dark Arts since spell lessons would alert others to your presence." Her farther spoke in a tone that meant no more protests. "Your cat is already at her home, as well as your stuff. You must not reveal to anyone your location."
"You'll be attending an American High School's summer school." Sarah took over. "You must obey her rules about being out after dark without question. Sunnydale sits over a location of a Hellmouth. You'll be going by the name of Rosenberg instead of Granger while there. Willow is my half sister, we have different maiden names and that will give you some added protection."
"You want me to abandon my friends?" The girl gasped.
"No," Sarah replied. "We want you safe, so we can help your friends without having to worry about you being hurt in the cross fire. You leave now!"
Hermione felt drizzly and landed on her rear in a living room. "Dawn give her a minute." Called a voice. Hermione was lifted to her feet. "Welcome to my home, Hermione. I am your Aunt Willow Rosenberg." The slim redhead smiled. "This is Dawn Summers, my ward and your roomie. The blonde in the chair is Spike, also know as William the Bloody, my husband in all, but name." Spike flashed on his game face.
"He's a vampire." Hermione yelped going white.
"Yes," Willow confirmed. "Spike is my mate." She showed off the bite marks on her neck. "You have nothing to fear from him. He's sworn to protect all I call family."
"The gentleman clearing his glasses is Giles, Rupert Giles, he'll be teaching you the best he can."
Giles nodded and stood. "Miss Rosenberg." They shook hands.
"Finally, the girl in the corner is Faith. She's a slayer."
Faith just nodded in acknowledgement.
Back in England in an hotel room. "It's done." Sarah Granger spoke appearing. "All the files that showed Hermione, as our daughter are gone. Both the Ministry's and Muggle worlds."
"It's the only way to keep her safe." Her husband replied. "We can't let your father find out about her."
"Mum and him were married, she was shocked. That her husband turned out to be Voldemort." Sarah hung her head. "Is the name change complete?"
"Yes, we are Mr and Mrs Flynn now." Her husband spoke. "We are a honeymooning couple."
Outside, the Granger family home a sign read for sale.
Willow lead Hermione up to the room she would be sharing with Dawn. Dawn had gone on ahead. "Your house is like a mansion?" Hermione spoke.
"It is." Willow smiled. "It was a gift when I and Spike mated. His grandsire gave us this house."
A woman in a long dress, holding a doll danced towards the pair. "Who do we have here?" She sang
"Hermione, the stars sing." The woman smiled. "Much will depend on you."
Willow placed a reassuring hand on her niece's shoulder.
"Dru," Willow spoke.
"My little tree speaks." Dru smiled at Willow. "My little boy's lady. Daughter in law."
"This is my niece, Hermione." The redhead introduced her niece.
"That makes me Great Auntie Dru." The crazy woman let her vampire face slide into place. "Where's her bite mark. No protection. I'll protect."
"Dru's a master vampire. Very few attack one with her bite mark." Willow winked. "Receiving a bite is an experience in itself."
"So to be protected. I've got to be bitten." Hermione felt scared.
"In nutshell dear." Dru danced behind her. "Now hold still so the mark is clean." The vampire held the witch's shoulders.
Hermione closed her eyes. Dru's fangs punched the skin on her neck. Hermione whimpered, as she felt the vampire draw blood out of her body. The sensation was the most mind blowing in the experience of the girl's life to date. After a few seconds she felt weak. Dru stopped taking blood and carefully closed the wounds. Hermione blacked out.
Hermione woke up in the morning. She felt on her neck. There was a dressing on it. "Hermione, I would stay in bed the rest of the day or go slow." The girl in the next bed spoke. "Dru, was a little upset that you passed out."
"Dawn, how long?" Hermione rasped.
"Just the night." The girl replied.
Faith came into the room and collapsed in a chair. She was mumbling something about headboards and thin walls.
"Can't sleep?" Hermione asked.
"Kid," Faith grinned. "Your Aunt Willow and Uncle Spike go at it like rabbits. I've lost count how many times Red's screamed since two this morning."
Hermione went a colour that made her face look like a beetroot.
Within 10 minutes Faith had crashed out on Dawn's bed. Dawn was writing in her journal at her desk
"Is the young lady ready for breakfast?" A blonde asked standing in the door way holding a tray.
"Hi Tara!" Dawn smiled.
"Hermione, this is Tara, your Aunt's ex-girlfriend and Giles' love bunny." Faith groaned. "Can't this slayer get any sleep?"
"No!" Tara snapped. "There's a meeting of the local coven this morning. This Voldemort's got the hold wicca community up in arms." Tara walked over to Hermione. "You, young lady are going to eat all this up." The tray had two boiled eggs, toast soldiers and some mixed fruit in a bowel.
"I'll never eat all this." Hermione's eyes went wide while she sat up.
"Your Aunt's orders." Tara placed the tray on her lap. "Loosing two units of blood, should not have left you passed out. Willow had a doctor out. Your iron count is low and you had just came off the rag. Now eat!"
Hermione began to eat.
Willow wandered into the meeting chamber about five minutes before the meeting.
"Still can't believe it's that bad over there." Amy Madison spoke, next to her was her mother.
Her mother nodded.
"They're getting worse." Willow spoke. "Fudge as not acted. Now hundreds may die. Out of those hundreds how and who do we save?"
"That why you've called us all here?" Catherine Madison asked.
"Yes, it is." Willow nodded.
Tara entered the chamber, as did Dawn, Faith and Hermione.
"Lets get this meeting under way." Catherine sneered. "I hope it's productive cos' this dark wizard will eat us for lunch, if we get it wrong."
"No, he'll use, you abuse you then kill you." Willow corrected.
"First things first." Tara spoke. "I take Hermione, as my learner."
"Huh?" Hermione had no idea what was going off.
"Blood relatives don't teach each other wiccan magic," Catherine spoke. "It gets a little awkward. Tara, as taken you on has her student."
"Can we move it a long please." Faith yawned.
"Who do we protect in during the civil war that is about to break out in the World of Wizards?" Amy spoke. "Who can we save and who we must let go?"
"I have concerns." Tara spoke. "If we do grant protection to individuals, do we let it become known on underground rumour mills or not."
"I take it Giles, as been asked to grant protection to someone?" Amy asked.
"Yes, last night, to young girl called Virginia Weasley." Tara spoke.
"Ginny!" Hermione gasped.
Willow signalled to Hermione to stay quit for a moment.
"And a boy name Draco Malfoy." The blonde continued
"The girl's parent are known targets for Voldemort. Giles, as granted protection to her given the situation." Tara paused. "The situation with the girl is serious. She's in a state of shock. The girl was captured. She was forced to watch what they did to several women. Then woman were killed and the girl was cover with their blood. She was found tied to a shake outside her parents home." A tear rolled down Tara's face.
"They have place a mind charm on her." The woman sighed. "It's beyond anything that's been encountered. The memories can't be eased or suppressed."
"Poor Ginny." Hermione sobbed. Dawn rubbed her back.
"The boy was beaten and whipped and left to die," Tara added. "Because he refused to rape and kill the girl."
"He's made the first move." Catherine Madison was alarmed.
"We all knew he would. This is only the first step." Willow spoke her voice low and even. "Attack the family and friends of any who would stand against him. It's a warning."
"Unfortunately," Tara interrupted. "The wizard press, as already reported the story. For some reason the boy's name wasn't mentioned."
"Fools." Faith spat. "Hasn't the girl suffered enough already. Her face is known now. They can track her now. Besides on a tactical point they've given him the means to terrorize them. First rule, filter all media reports."
"Thank you General Military History," Willow interrupted. "That still leaves us with the questions. Who do we protect? And how?"
"There's the other covens, maybe we should bring them up to speed on the situation." Amy suggested. "We can only protect so many anyway. That way the refugees can be scattered and not found easily."
"That's the how." Dawn spoke. "What about the who?"
The meeting went on for five hours. Hermione could not believe what the coven was discussing. Who they would protect and who would have to look after themselves.
There was yelling fits. Crying fits. By the end had drawn up a list. Faith called it the genesis list. 50 names that the coven would protect. All children or young adults. Only one of each family. Other covens would decide how they dealt with the coming war's results.
The meeting broke up with Catherine and Amy going to meet with the leaders of the two nearest covens. Tara and Dawn went to the kitchen.
"Why?" Hermione sobbed.
Willow placed a hand on her niece's shoulder. "What choice do we have?"
Hermione looked up at Willow.
"We stand by and all is lost." The redhead continued. "If we fight now and we lose. Again all would be lost. If we act carefully, we may yet save some, while we organise ourselves to at first drive off Voldemort. Then when we are able kick his sorry butt to hell."
"It's just hard I know some of the people not on the list." Hermione spoke.
"I know," her Aunt replied. "I know. It's even harder if you know the reasons why Voldemort, is doing what he is."
"You know why?" The young witch asked.
"Yes," came the soft reply. Willow walked over to a sofa. Hermione followed.
Willow patted the seat next to her. "Hermione," she began. "There's something's you need to know about the family."
"I know there has been a lot of surprises for you recently." Willow knew this secret had to be told. "This is the biggest of them all. Your grandmother was once married to a man called Tom Riddle, you know him by the name Voldemort."
"What?" Hermione stood. "That bastards my!?"
"Let me finish!" Willow left no room for argument. "Your mother's truth name is Sarah Anne Riddle. We have kept this secret for years and it must stay so. Tom, one day began punching my mom. So your grandmother and mother disappeared from the World of Wizards. Between leaving Tom and the wizarding world she had a brief affair with a younger man, James Potter, my farther. That is why he hates my brother. That is why he went on that killing spree. He found out."
Hermione was stunned. The war that was about to be fought was all because of James Potter sleeping with Voldemort's estranged wife.
"Oh god," Hermione finally spoke. "What I'm I going to do?"
"There is nothing that can be done at this moment in time." Her aunt spoke. "It is all in the hands of others for now."
Smoke filled a house. There were screams. Deatheaters laughing. A young witch called Lavender Brown saw her parents drop to the ground dead. She screamed in terror, as her own wand was destroyed in front of her. Ropes held her hands and feet together behind her back..
"Time to die." A Deatheater spoke. "After we finished having some fun with you first."
The Deatheaters laughed and approached the girl.
Out of the smoke a pair of hands grabbed the girl and pulled her back. While a bolt of lightning ripped apart a Deatheater.
Miles away. Willow shivered. "Incoming," she spoke.
A circle in the meeting room's floor began to glow.
