The diversity of cultures that continue to live in Amazonia (where Gaia began its work 12 years ago) provide one of the essential reference points for the rest of humanity. They embody a range of ways in which human beings see the world and can express themselves. They also reflect the common threads that run through all cultures and unit us as one species. One of the many perceptions that indigenous cultures hold in common is the understanding that the planet is a finite system in which a certain balance must be maintained, in order for life to be healthy. If human beings upset that balance, both they and other species will suffer. Many see the western lust for quick material gain, at the expense of other species, ecosystems and future generations, as a sign of profound immaturity. They believe they are presently holding the memory for humanity, of its right relationship with its planet home. Their hope is that the western mind will awaken to this memory before the distinction of the planet's life support systems has gone too far.
