Oedipus
by Sophocles
translated by E F Watling

From the steps of his palace the young King Oedipus
has barely an hour to unmask the killer blighting his city.

As the midsummer sun sets over one of London’s most breathtaking skylines, a unique outdoor theatre event is about to unfold in the shadow of Norman Foster’s spectacular GLA headquarters. Take a seat in The Scoop, the beautiful open-air amphitheatre at the base of the building and let the action unfold around you under the night sky.

Sophocles packed more drama, suspense and horror into his short murder mystery than you get in a whole week’s TV drama. Now The Steam Industry, London’s liveliest interpreters of great plays, give the ancient tale a whole new kick by presenting the thriller as if it were taking place today, with City Hall itself playing a pivotal role as a centre of power.

Stephen Beckett, best known as Coronation Street’s Dr Matt Ramsden, leads the cast as the King and the first production in this inspiring new theatre is created by director Phil Willmott and the team behind last year’s acclaimed Off-West End productions of Henry VIII, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui and Measure for Measure Malaya.
