Sandra Barnard is an artist who sold her art prints and cards for years. She has had to give up work due to ill health but wanted to do something creative. So she started designing and making crystal, beaded jewellery
"I am selling my hand-made jewellery for a low price just to cover my costs because I enjoy making them. All my necklaces, earrings and bracelets are one-off designs. The necklaces are strung on nylon coated stainless steel wire, which is very strong and drapes well. I use silver plated clasps and pins. The chokers, which use wooden, bone, glass and semi precious beads and pendants, are strung on faux suede, which is made from micro-fibre and is stronger than natural suede.
I mostly use glass beads. Many of these come from India, where they are hand-made. This means that there is quite a variation in colour and size, but it also gives them individuality and charm. I also use Bohemian glass beads, which are machine-made to a very high standard.
I incorporate semi-precious stones, crystals in many of my designs. These include Rose quartz, fluorite, Jasper, Agate, Jade, Mother of Pearl and Carnelian.

Wild Dance
Sandra Barnard is a painter and storyteller.
She has painted a powerful series of images called Wild Dance. Women dance and twirl amidst rich forests and exotic landscapes. All women can connect to her images which are available as mounted 30X40 prints or as hand assembled cards. Wild Dance represents the power of women to create a life full of passion and freedom, to dance with life.
"I painted many women dancing together," says Sandra. "In that way they can represent the many facets of women. Also, for me or it can mean they we can dance together, support and can give power to each other.
I found the Wild dance after my very long marriage ended and I suddenly found I could be myself and not be just ‘the wife’," explains Sandra.
Sandra was for many years one of the finest storytellers in The College of Storytellers whose aim was to revive the art of storytelling for adults. ‘Stories are powerful. They can speak to us beyond culture and time. A story can speak to us in a way that bare information can’t.’ says Sandra. In the same way her Wild Dance images convey a story which the viewers have to find the meaning for themselves. She has translated her skill as a storyteller into her art. The story is implied and not stated.
Her images painted from the heart are an inspiration for anyone, not just women.
Sandra’s work is available from Myrna Shoa her sister and fellow artist.
