Our Re-enactment Interests

Mike & I are members of two re-enactment societies which take up most of our spare time, Regia & Conquest.

The first Regia Anglorum re-enacts the period AD950-AD1066. We have many interests within this society, including combat, living history and rowing and sailing the replica longshipsNaedling at South Cerney.

We participate in many public events and training sessions every year. Previously we have visited the Jorvik Viking Festival, Croft Castle for the National Trust, the Royal Armouries Museum and Fritton Lakes. We also participate in filmwork and school talks for Key Stage 2 & 3.

The second society which are members of is Conquest. This society re-enacts the period AD1066 - AD1216. Again we participate in combat and living history activities. The society also has a working siege engine. This is a perrier, a siege engine relying entirely on human strength. We've used this at a number of events, including one at Dover Castle. There we were re-enacting the AD1216 siege of Dover Castle. Our re-enactment was so realistic that we even got our shots from the perrier inside the inner bailey! You can see pictures of the perrier on the Conquest web-site.

Conquest are also currently looking at activities that would have been done in and around a castle that can be recreated in a weekend at an event. One of the more recent projects has been the portable forge constructed by Brian Morris.

I've recently written a paper about the clothing of Norman women in the period AD1066 - AD1140. I may follow this up with one on female clothing of the period AD1140 - AD1200, but this is still in the pipeline.
