Wildflowers
help feed wildlife. So why not growing some? We are sure the fairies
would approve - after all, it is often said that fairies like to
live in wild flowers... so why not grow some?
This year we will be creating 3 different "Fairy Gardens"
for you to copy: a woodland garden for shade, a flower garden for
hot sunny spots and a bog garden for damp places like the edge of
ponds. You can buy wildflower plants or seeds from most big garden
centres or you can order them by post from Landlife
or the Wildflower Centre.
Our gardens are made in large wooden containers. Don't worry if
you do not have a garden as you can make smaller versions in window
boxes. Remember never to use compost with peat in it, as this is
taken from old bogs that are home for lots of small creatures. We
think the fairies would be upset about this - especially the Irish
ones. Use soil from the garden or a soil based compost - ask at
your local garden centre.
Also make sure you don’t buy wooden boxes made of wood from really
old forests. To be safe use wood with the FSC stamp on it – or use
something else like clay or an old recycled plastic pot.
If you do have a large garden perhaps you can persuade your parents
to make part of it a "Fairy Corner".
Our gardens give you a list of what wild plants are best for each
place and some ideas for adding fairy decorations, but you must
decorate it however you like.
